It's banned as far as I remember.

    What? What do you remember?

A proscription order for it hasn't shown up in Iris Oifigiuil (http://www.irisoifigiuil.ie/)

And people here have been talking about it goodo. And my local HMV has it...

It showed in the IFI (maybe the Kino too). It's unrated I think, meaning they didn't try and pass it for certification. The result of which is that it is not - and will not be - eligible for release on video. Sorry folks, but you'll have to play.com to get it.

I remeber a big hissy fit over it being banned here.

Just because people have been going on about it here doesn't mean that it's not banned. Play does have it and will deliever here. Also, as been pointed out it did get screenings in the IFI.

I watched the first 20mins last night. I'm pretty sure Xtravision will never, ever stock this. Most violent movie ever.

I bought a copy in Virgin in Derry - which only means it's not banned in the UK I suppose.

    Good show, I thought.

The film is not banned here.
However, this is not because the Censor has passed the film, it is because it has never been submitted for classification.

The IFI did show the movie (two runs) without it being classified, which they can do as they are a private members film club.

I saw the film during its first run in the IFI (and have it on DVD) and I would be very suprised if the Censor were to pass it* uncut (if at all). So, as Draco suggests, if you want to see it, you had better order from Play.com et al.

*Holy catholic Ireland blah, blah, blah.

Have seen it for sale in many places, but never for rental.

Where have you seen it on sale? I'm pretty sure they're not allowed sell it since it wasn't submitted for classification.

In an effort to satiate my own curiousity and put this issue to rest, I just rang the Irish Film Censor's Office. I got put through to a very helpful guy who worked in the video section.

'Irreversible' was passed with an 18 cert, with a runtime of 93 minutes 28 seconds (This is one second off the runtime on the BBFC's website).

I also asked about 'Ichi the Killer' and he said that the live action version hadn't been submitted but the recent Anime version had and had been passed with an 18 cert with a runtime of 45 minutes and 47 seconds (This is identical to the runtime on the BBFC's website).

So to cut a long story short, 'Irreversible' was passed uncut and is rated 18.

it may not have been submitted for film classification due to the cost of submitting it, when its probably only going to be showing in the ifc and the kino, it was probably/is certified for home viewing.

p.s. thanks agent orange that was irritating me. .

You can also pick it up in Redlight Records in Galway. Both stores have it.

And we may be showing it in the GMIT Film Society over the next month or so.

Interesting! I wonder why it didn't get submitted/released in the cinema run then? UGC often show offbeat movies now and the violence alone would have ensured an audience for it...

If you are living in Cork you can rent this film.

It is available to rent upstairs in Vibes and Scribes.
