How rich are you in the overall scheme of things? This is a real eye opener. Just click here and enter your gross salary in sterling to see where you stand in the UK. After that see where you stand worldwide.

    1 EUR = 0.67 GBP

or use this to convert euro to sterling

Don't think you can call it accurate as the cost of living is WAY higher over here, especially if you live in Dublin.

My income puts me in the top 33% richest people in the UK. I can barely live on it over here.

Wow, I'm in the top 25% or so. However, the test is pretty useless as a measure of wealth. As K. says, Dublin is extraordinarily expensive. For a start, we may have to pay higher income taxes. Secondly, there's the hidden tax of VAT which is much smaller in countries like the U.S. Thirdly, we're rife with stealth taxes - waste charges, etc. Then there's the crippling cost of accomodation, food, practically breathing...

I seem to recall a survey done once, where it figured out much spending money the average Irish person has once the cost of basic living - accomodation, food, etc. - has and factoring in the price of goods. We were, if I remember rightly, quite poor all in all...

Tis in sterling, what a pain.

I did an international one once that showed i was in the top 12% globally. Quite depressing as I am still a student and don't earn all that much yet!

Before you all get too buzzed about how the cost of living in Dublin is WAY higher than somwhere else....you might want to refresh you memories with teh study produced earlier this year / late last year listing the most expensive cities in the world to live in.

London was the highest-listed EU city....which would mean that it is not cheaper than Dublin.

I earn f*ck-all by almost anybody's standards thanks to my scholarship funding, and I'm still in the world's top 13%. Just living in my house, without any heating oil for a short period of time has helped me realise what its like for all the people who have to go through that permanently - its not nice, and we're a lot better off than most people who whinge about their taxes think we are. I earn less than I would get on the dole, and yet there are over 5 billion people worse off than me. Sure, the cost of living is probably a lot less in the Ugandan countryside, but try doing without the Internet or something similar for 2 weeks. Even that simple loss of luxury makes you remember just how lucky we are.

Apparently I am in the top 4% in the UK, and the top 0.85% in the world, or something like that.

Don't feel very rich. Bloody Mortgage.

    Thank you.

Dont forget that half of the worlds population have never made or received a phone call. And in China, where a billion people live, the average salary is €1,000 per year.

    Pfff....

When I saw the thread title I suspected that this would be the content.

Look at everyone complaining about how poor they are but by implication you all either:

    1. own a computer and can afford to be on line recreationally
    2. are in education where you are not only learning information that should put you in a position to earn a salary some time soon...and you have leisure time which you are spending utilising a resource unavailable to many even here in this country
    3. are in employment where your employer not only pays you a salary but provides you with a PC and web access that you can use recreationally. You also seem to have free time whilst at work so you're not in a sweat shop...and if you're accessing boards "secretly" you obviously aren't too worried about getting the sack for it
    4. are somewhere where you are paying to be on line, in which case you have enough expendable income to do so

There are probably one or two other possibilities but none of you really have the right to complain all that much really. Yes the cost of living is high, it effects us all, so just think how hard it is for people in this country who:

    1. can't afford a computer or even a phone line
    2. do not have access to even second level education
    3. do not have a job and due to (2) aren't likely to get one soon that will get them out of (1)
    4. would probably be thrown out of an internet cafe for (1) (2) and (3)

    jeez

    wingers

You are in the 10.46% richest people in the world.

There are 627,746,472 people richer than you.

There are 5,372,253,528 people poorer than you.

I find this highly implausible. I am a Clerical Officer!

    Apparently I'm doing alright.

Excuse me while I snort some coke off this hooker.

Hmmm....intriguing how so many people seem to associate being rich with using drugs and paying for sexual favours....or is that just what poor people aspire to?

replace coke with flour and this hooker with my cat and you get a pretty good estimate of how rich DapperGent really is.

Krattapopov, yeah, especially if you have a mix of friends from far away places... like bosnia and stuff. then you're the richest man on earth.

heh. Top 1% apparently here - I guess I'd better stock up on expensive drugs and hookers, just to keep up with all the joneses here ;-)

Seriously though, I do find it funny the way that people in the west (remember 15% of the world owns 85% of the wealth - and that 15% is also roughly the percentage of web connected people) cannot stand to think of how ealthy we are.

One time on a web posting board (actually during the last gulf war) I was trying to make a guy from brooklyn understand what it was like to grow up with no electricity, no water, and no education. he's a very intelligent guy, but his response was:

"when I was a kid, my parents lived in a house with no power, no water and I couldn't get into any schools cos I was a reprobate. So I know what it's like, you don't have to tell me"

Now, I know this guy had a hard life by US standards, I've met him in real life and he's 100% real with what he says. But it took AGES to get him to realise that, although he had no water, power or school, the houses next to him and all around him did, and that's a huge difference from having to walk 20 miles to a contaminated hole in the desert... And that the police force in NYC, bad as they are, were still preventing him and his neighbours being preyed upon as happens in most "developing" (i.e. war torn) countries.

    Funny, huh?

Mind you, on a monday morning, I just hate being reminded that, whatever I may think, I live in a fabulous paradise which is pure science fiction to well over half the world... I wanna feel oppressed LOL

    ;-)

im in the 29.7% bracket in britain and in the 10.72% richest people in the world bracket yeah really makes me happy that 5,356,522,972 people are poorer than me and i can barely save with what i have:(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,312 ✭✭✭mr_angry

Yeah, but you can live without fear of:

    a) Starvation
    b) Disease
    c) Militias

    Poor us.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,411 ✭✭✭shotamoose

It's a pretty misleading result. When it told me there were '50m people poorer than you in the UK' I thought "what, you're counting everyone? Even babies?". And true enough, if you stick in £1000 as your annual income, it puts you at almost exactly the mid-range. Half the country 'earns' less than a grand a year? Well, maybe it's literally true, but still ...

All this does is compare the incomes of individuals. It tells you nowt about household income, costs, standards of living, etc etc.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 650 ✭✭✭dr_manhattan

Good point, shotamoose: never thought of that. Mind you, a little bias on the figures never huirt anyone, hahaha.

As I said above, it's a good idea to put things in perspecyive like this: pity they have to go and massage the figures to prove a point...

...but maybe I'm just disappointed that I'm not in the top 1% earners, hahahaha.
