Sky+ (how hot is too hot?)

    Hi all,

Sky+ should have (according to the manual) 10cm of clearance above and to the side for heat dissipation. There is an internal fan but it apparently only comes on when required... which appears to be never. Most of this heat is coming from the hard drive which is constantly spinning. For the record this is a lot more heat than a regular digibox.

I have about 4-5cm above and maybe 6cm at each side, on an open front shelf.

So... the Sky+ box is pretty hot (very warm on top, and hot underneath). I put some 1cm spacers under the feet which does appear to cool it down underneath a tiny bit, but I wonder if I should do something else.

I tried putting a PC case fan just behind the fan slot, powered at 3V (rather than 12) and this makes a huge difference, with the box now cool to the touch. However it does make a miminal but rather annoying noise.

How is is your box? Am I overly paranoid? I think I see a trend with my past posts.

Ix (paranoid chimney/hot Sky+ box guy)

The fan in my Sky+ box seems to be on constantly. I plugged it out last night (had to to move in my nice new tele) and the room seemed very quiet. Ususally the sound doesn't bother me as TV volume drowns it out. The box was warm when I moved it, but not hot.

Don't worry about the paranoia :D

If a pc fan made a huge difference I would think that perhaps its too hot.
You only have half the clearance they advise, so like 1/4 the volume of air circulating that you should have..

Perhaps its needs to be moved?
Stick it on the floor somewere, so it has nothing around it (except the floor obviously) and see what difference that makes.....

I asked that same question a wile ago but didn’t get an answer really. My +box is still V-hot and the fan never comes on.
