Browsing images in WinXP

I'm hoping somebody else has had this problem and can tell me what to do:

Running Windows XP. When I browse to folders containing images (JPEGS mostly) it causes the program to crash. e.g. In ImageReady, trying to open a JPEG causes ImageReady to crash. Even browsing to a file using Windows Explorer can cause explorer to crash. The really weird thing is that it doesn't happen every time, just most times. It doesn't generally throw up error messages so I'm not sure what to do. Nothing in MS Knowledge Base. I'm sure it's an OS problem...

    Any ideas????

    Thanks,
    Bill
