Power supply for USB hub

I recently bought a Belkin USB 4-Port micro hub but If I put too many devices on it, I need to connect a power supply. I haven't been able to get one. The box says that there is an optional 5 volt 2.5 amp supply. My question is - how critical is the current and voltage? Could I use one of those multipurpose units which allows you to dial up the voltage and set the pin configuration?

i'd imagine a multipal adapter would work. Was actually dealing with a similar model that you're speaking of yesterday, but it had a power supply, just looked like a bog standard adapter.
