I know of someone near Killaloe. Not very near West Galway.

If you can use a drill and masonary bolts and have some confidence regarding making up the connectors on the cable, you can do it DIY better than some Sky Installers. A £25 Satellite meter would be recommended (It has a needle on a scale and a sensitivity knob).

We can post links to instructions and fill in with anything you get stuck on.

Alternatively check Golden Pages. Get a reference of a job done before and see how happy the customer is.

I know a good guy based out of Galway city who put in my Sky system in Mayo and he's connecting up a 2nd Digibox for me this week. If you want his name and contact number let me know and I'll send it on in a pm.

After a nightmare with a Dublin knacker who wanted to install my Sky Digital in Knocknacarra, I told him to fcuk off, and got another guy from Co. Clare who did a commendable job. I'll post his details here when I get home, or if that's not allowed, I'll PM them to you. He rally did a top notch job.

It perfectly describes some of the installers working for the larger companies contracted to SKY .

Most small independent installers are not knackers, even if they are from Dublin :D

I take your word he was a gangster but must you describe him as a "Dublin Knacker", was he a horse glue maker from Dublin?

No it doesnt, and believe me I've met quite a few, none have been from Dublin (thats not to say we dont have bad installers) , none are members of the travelling community and none are horse glue makers. Cant we find a better way of describing people who are not up to scratch? Bear in imind anyone can read this forum so why do we use terms that may discourage some potential members.

Stop getting on your high horse Tony. Set up a trade body to certify Sat Installers for competence , hygiene , veracity , reliability and trustworthiness instead.

Until such a body exists (for the benefit of all) then please accept that knackers can get into the business.....ownership of caravan not even a prerequisite.

If there was a reputable trade body website this thread would not have been necessary .....would it ? We know that gas installers are Corgi and electricians are RECI .

What would the Sat body be called / me thinks aloud !

SICI Sat Installation Council of Ireland

Nahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, that would not inspire confidence.

I can see no point in debating further as you have obviously missed the point, as you insist on using inappropriate language. FYI I am the only sat installer in ROI who has ever joined a trade body, the CAI, I dont see it as my job to police other installers.

You are the only 'professional' installer in the country then. I understand how lonely that can be!

As there is no systematic drift towards professionalism in the Sat Installing business I take it you understand why these threads occur.

There is no trade body in Ireland.

There are no acceptable standards of education and behaviour and ethics among sat installers nationally.

The consumer is left to rely on word of mouth and these threads arise because of that.

You fail to acknowledge that, thats a pity. I am not the one 'missing the point' here I feel.

The tail end of this thread is really a simple case of you, the Only Professional in Ireland trying to defend the indefensible when you really should be encouraging all installers to join the CAI and encouraging all consumers to use CAI members for their installs.

Until the industry recognises the need for standards these little eruptions will periodically occur.

I was defending nobody, in fact I agree with all your points. What i object to is the use of the phrase "dublin knacker" or "knacker" full stop. I find the phrase offensive.

The thread occured because the gentleman was looking for an installer in west galway.

There are acceptable standards in ireland, anyone who uses John Breeds book (the bible) as a reference will tell you this. Its just that not everyone chooses to implement these standards.

I am quite certain that I am not the only professional installer in Ireland.

I am defending no one, all I ask is that the use of offensive language be curtailed. Thats the point you missed, why you diverted into a tirade about installer standards is what I simply do not understand?

Can we agree to disagree and move on from this?

I look forward to the day when the Simple Answer to the kind of question that was posited at the start of the thread is that one of us links to the Professional Installers Association website with Member list and Code of Conduct for all to see.

I look equally forward to seeing you announcing that a meeting will be held to discuss the formation of same. I'm sure it will be stickied on the spot.

We all agree it would be an excellent move and is long overdue.
