Well it seems Madonna has been confirmed for Slane this year and because of her religous beliefs involving some stupid hollywood new age religion it will take place on a sunday, august 22nd seems to be the date.

personally i think this is a travesty, worse than robbie williams headlining it, i definatly will not be going to slane this year now and witness/oxegen is looking very poor aswell.

The Darkness, Bowie, NERD and Chemical Brothers!!!???

The Darkness have 1 album out and there headling!? there also not much good
Bowie i personally dont like but i dont mind him being there
NERD are some stupid black pop group and the chemical brothers are past it dance, just my opinions but ya have to admit its a poor start.

I really hope this isn't true. Its all over the papers but the one consolation I suppose is that theres nothing on the mcd website yet so hopefully (although unlikely) they have it wrong.

Madonna is the type of person you go to in the Point, not at Slane! I just hope to god that Reading Ireland now goes ahead and blows the ****e outta Slane and Oxegen!

Can't see it selling out, especially not on a Sunday as it'll mean people will prob have to take the next day off work too.

    PLEASE PLEASE don't be true!

There is five stages at Oxegen, so you can choose whether you want to go to The Darkness or whoever. On the contrary I think that this is a great start to this year's festival in terms of lineup, last year was seriously lacking in terms of headliners and I anticipate that there shall be some great bands announced over the next few weeks.

As for Madonna, well, at least they got someone new who's fit for headlining. I felt that bands like Travis and Stereophonics were in the running for this year again, but as you can probably tell I'm not a fan of Slane myself ;). Last year's Slane was very rock-orientated but that kind of stellar line-up ain't going to be repeated year after year; it is whoever the UK's V Festival books that sets their marks for Slane after all. I'd just go to Reading Ireland instead (if that is still taking place of course).

    Madonna 'to play at Slane'
    By Maureen Coleman
    20 February 2004

SPECULATION was mounting today that Madonna could play her first ever Irish concert at Slane later this year.

It is understood the Queen of Pop is in talks with promoters in Ireland to perform at the annual summer concert in Co Meath.

If the show is confirmed, the American superstar will be the first female to rock Slane Castle.

Madonna has been approached by promoters MCD/Wonderland Promotions in the past, but has as yet to bring a tour to Ireland.

A spokesman for MCD/Wonderland today said it was too early to confirm acts for the concert.

But he did not rule out that Madonna was in discussions with them.

"Various acts are being considered but nothing has been confirmed yet," he said.

"We never comment on an artist until they have been confirmed."

Madonna revealed during a television interview last year that she is planning to tour in 2004.

She has not yet announced details of the tour but it is believed she is hoping to stage 32 shows in the US as well as 12 to 15 shows in Europe.

Dance auditions are being held soon in New York and Los Angeles and details are posted on the official Madonna website.

If Madonna does choose to play Slane, she may also take time to check out convent schools for daughter Lourdes.

Earlier this year she revealed she is hoping to send Lourdes to an Irish convent school.

What kind of a support line up would play with Madonna?

Err ok. NERD are made up of Pharrell Williams & Chad Hugo (sometimes called The Neptunes) .. they're one of the hottest production teams in the states at the moment, and are behind a fair amount of acts .. Justin, Britney, Kelis, Usher and Busta Rhymes to name but a few can all credit their best selling singles to the pair. Plus they've released two albums of their own which have sold very well (I'm not a big fan of either tho).
While their ultra-slick production may not be up your alley to call them some stupid black pop group is just showing your complete ignorance.
i definatly will not be going to slane this year now and witness/oxegen is looking very poor aswell.

I seriously doubt the vast majority of Madonna fans will be on a drunken bender.

Personally I think that The White Stripes, Snow Patrol or Franz Ferdinand would be perfect for Slane... the sort of lineup that would appeal to a lot of people yet still keep it somewhat edgy and less mainstream from a marketing point of view.

Madonna.... *yawn*..... she's a washed up has-been....what publicity stunt will she try next to get in the news.
Oxegen will be good though, Bowie is a legend, he put in a great gig in the Point last November and I think the Darkness will rock too :)

personally i think that witnness/oxegen or watever its called will be pretty good. the darkness may not be every1s cup of tea but at the last two witnness ive bein to i didnt go see david gray or coldplay or oasis cus i just wasnt bothered by them. in all honestly there is always something to suit everybody at witnness. there just so much on anyway i dont think anyone will be forcing u to go see "some stupid black pop group".

oddly everyone seems to have forgotten about the quite popular band with an album out this summer who could do well as headliners for slane.....................

Madonna is not suitable for headlining Slane, it's a huge disappointment to hear she got the gig even though I do like some of her stuff. I was secretly hoping for REM, though I know they headlined there once before.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,272 ✭✭✭✭Atomic Pineapple

Whatever NERD are i dont like them, i dont mind if you do, and all the "artists" you mentioned there are pop oriented commercial cráp in my eyes anyway, thats my view.

as for the prodigy, was really looking forward to seeing them at witness the year they played but they were the worst act i seen that day.

hopefully more better acts will be announced for oxegen, the acts so far are just not my "cup of tea"
Personally I think that The White Stripes, Snow Patrol or Franz Ferdinand would be perfect for Slane...

agree with ya there, very good line up, hopefully 2 out of 3 at least will be at oxegen

Slane always has the situation where one year good next year crap next year good. This is beyong crap though. Madonna is just a joke. I hope it dont sell and she left there on her own. They'll need some serious support to sell it so we can home.

Read the paper the other day (Drogheda Leader, if anyone's interested, local Slane news), and she's not, I repeat NOT, playing Slane, it was a nasty vicious scary rumour. :)

Yeah, I've heard this countless times myself. So much so, I'm starting to believe it. Does anyone know if anyone is confirmed yet?

To be honest, I'd ride with Satan himself to see either of these in concert!

At the start Witnness normally looks poor to one person or another, like last year it’ll probably be about 100 artists, so I don’t think it's worth getting worried about it so soon.

BTW just call it ‘Witnness 2004’, fuok the other name - it was too long before I started spelling witness wrongly.

I think Slane with be the big acts of the summer 2003... i.e the Darkness etc

    Reasoning behind this..

Slane 2003 - was Red Hot Chili Peppers/Foo Fighters/Queens of the Stone Age...
They all had their Albums out around the summer of 2002 / around Christmas time

    Slane 2002 - was Stereophonics/Nickelback
They all had their albums out around the summer of 2001 / around Christmas time

I could be wrong.. i hope im wrong...

Bands usually tour for 12/18 months and the groups at the end of that cycle usually play the European festivals at the end of August (that's if they had their albums out during the summer of the last year).

But The Darkness won't be playing Slane, since they're already playing at the Oxegen festival (sorry monument, ye have to get with the times... I guess) but their really wasn't many heavy hitters during the last half of 2003...

It would make sense for Aerosmith to play here for the simple fact they have a new album out this month - Honkin on Bobo! Although if they are coming here they'll more than likely go to the UK too which means from an Irish point of view they're far more likely to do Reading Ireland if they come here at all because then they could do the Reading Festival too.

AC/DC i don't know whats happening but they got back together last year so hopefully that goes along with your theory of the big act of last summer doing this summer's gig.

ACDC are meant be releasing a new album this year... i think it maybe in the coming months

Since both acdc and aerosmith have new albums it does make sense for them. Madonna would be extremely stupid. Also them changing the day for her would be a bit much.

And Reading Ireland? Em what this actually happening?

As for Oxygen. I heard Strokes are now on the bill. Anyone have website link for it?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 450 ✭✭James R

Not much has been said about Reading Ireland yet but there's been no reason to think it won't be going ahead. Nothing will be confirmed about it until the Reading Festival in England is confirmed too and there's no one lined up for that either. I'd say by this time next month we'll know more.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,714 ✭✭✭Ryaner

It would be pretty sweet if reading ireland did go ahead with a good line up.

    Wait and see so

AC/DC are unlikely for Slane (unfortunately  ) ... it looks like they're are only beginning work on their new album now ... so you're looking at a late 04 / early 05 release for that .....

Areosmith - I don't really mind ... although they would be soooooooo much better than friggin Madonna ..

... but I honestly thought real contenders for Slane this year was gonna be The Who ... they have a new album coming out , and are already confirmed for the Isle Of White festival .... now- the Who would kick 7 types of ****e outta Slane ...:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,272 ✭✭✭✭Atomic Pineapple

the who would be class or ac/dc, but both unlikely i'd say, maybe the foo fighters could be at it, although i didnt think they were too great last year

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 104 ✭✭dellytots

I ****in hope its not madonna!
It'd b such a let down after last year deadly line up!
But Iv also heard it could be ac/dc!
    Anyone else hear dat?20
