Pay to play

I'm now pissed off with this pay to play bullshit.
I've done a few times, but never lost any money, but other night was the last straw.

Never EVER EVER get in contact with the following.

Garageland: If you want to hear more crap than your ears can handle, talk to Dermot of Garagegigs, his band were so shit he decided to take it out on any band he could. He'll promise you the world, say that you'll be reviewed, you'll win this, that, whatever, tell you that you will make money (which you won't), and give you a shity drumkit. Rubbish venues, on rubbish nights, with rubbish backlines. May accuse you of breaking various things in a venue, and then after destroying any hopes you ever have of playing a gig again, tries to make it up by giving you another gig, for which you have to pay.

Ignition: No matter how much you want to play the TBMC, don't talk to these either, will promise the same crap as Dermot does, and will probably give him your number.

If you happen to be playing these gigs, just walk out and say your just dropping gear to your car, and getting your wallet, and get the fuck out of there.

    Right.

At the end of the day, you make your own luck in this world. Go listen to a few bands mp3's give the ones you dig a shout, who are in a similar genre to yourselves, book a few gigs with those bands. Bypass the ****ing promoters. Promote yourself. Dermot never promised us **** all , we still did the gig , in fact we did two ! Voodoo wasnt great..but **** it.

Bitchin and moaning aint gonna help, its no secret that 99% of promoters are **** heads.

    Tom

You have to tell us what happened!!! :)
I agree with your sentiments. I've purposely avoided pay to play as the ethics of it is all wrong. Heard all the horror stories, some okay ones but never anyone singing the praises of it.

Do the support route or anything that doesn't involve paying money to play music.

A few years ago I played a few with a couple of other bands and we managed to make a few quid out of it, just gotta do the ground work yourself, sell the tickets.
After a while we just got the bands together and payed the venue directly, not much in the difference in cost from the pay to play gigs and venue costs. Some bands think it's beneath them to do the grunt work, it's unfortunate.
I totally agree that most pay to play promoter land ya with **** gear and a pile of crap you could do without hearing.
