Mod edit. Check date of this post first. Even zombies dont last this long

Saw a DVD of this great match being advertised on the telly. Thought: 'That's strange! I thought all the footage of that match, apart from the scores, had been trashed long ago. How come they can now release it as a full DVD?'

So popped into town, had a look at the sleeve notes in HMV and saw that there seems to be a hell of a lot of interviews with players who took part in the game. Doesn't seem to leave a lot of room over for footage of actual play.

If anybody is thinking of shelling out for this, be warned. It's probably a lot of talk and little action. Which is fine if that's what you want. But if you're expecting to see the match, I think you'll be disappointed.

According to the times, there's about 16 minutes of footage of the game & interviews with plenty of players from both sides. Still not a bad pressie for a rugbyhead if its reasonably priced.

The match wasn't televised, obviously there's some footage but AFAIK, the full match is not available.

Iirc, RTE sent their cameras to Cork to cover an RTE event.

IIRC this was the day RTE2 or Network2 as it used to be called began so RTE had their OB unit elsewhere on this never to be forgotten day.

Correct RTE had 1 maybe 2 OB units at the time and had them in Cork for RTE2 launch. There was only 1 camera at the game and most of that coverage has been lost AFAIK but small amount of coverage is still there

What is the longest point of time between a post in a thread and a resurrection post? 11 years must be a record!

Speaking of the Guinness Ad, my mate still has his match ticket & program and he managed to get one of the corner flags on the day. He texted me yesterday to say he is visible in the crowd during the Guinness Ad footage.

I'd imagine in 1978, full TV coverage of a midweek tour game would have been unheard of anyway.

Shame rte didn't have a camera at it, as it still ranks as the greatest achievement by an Irish rugby team. I sense the national team are as close as they have ever been to the ABs though as they are right now.

In fact the gap between the top team (we'll assume it's the ABs) in the world and the 7th (Wales) is as close as it has ever been.

Pretty well the case as I can't remember any midweek coverage of tour games in 1970's by RTE. BBCNI would have covered Ulster's midweek match with the 1978 NZ side.

Sure what did they need to televise for, every man, woman and child of Munster was there in person.

I was there. A great day was had by all. I may have been -14 years of age at the time, but I woke up with a hangover as bad as the rest of them. :) Hadn't really passed by the time I was born, came out wailing.

I guess it will be a real long shot, anyone who has kept a program since 1978 are hardly going to give it up now, though stranger things have happened.

Do all non-test sides makes such a big deal over their wins over the All Blacks?

Yeah I say they do considering how difficult it is to beat NZ. That Munster's game was not shown live on tv helped build mystique around it.. When Llanelli did it in 72 the game was shown live on tv afaik so story around the game Is quite different to Munster in 78

I think the Munster victory is considered a bit more special and treasured than the other wins simply because no Irish team has done it aside from them. Ulster drew with them twice and Ireland drew with them but only Munster have won.

They've lost to Newport, Cardiff, Llanelli and Swansea in the past but I don't think it's as big a deal in Wales simply because the Welsh side have beaten them a few times in times gone past.

If Ireland had won last year, I'm sure it would have taken a little bit of gloss off the 1978 result.

The fact that it was an 18 match tour (including all the B&I international sides), and it was the AB's only defeat, and they were nilled all make it a bit special. The good "special".

Other results, including the draw in '73 and the 4 wins against Australia, don't have anything like the same shine on them.

Their tour schedule that year must have been decided by favourite name as it's so crazy.

The All Blacks have a phenomenal record of touring the British Isles, never having lost in Scotland, only once in Ireland and just 7 times in Wales (excluding Babas defeat in 1973) and 9 times in England. So for Munster to win (having drawn with them in 1973) was some result.
