The music to Hannibal is pretty haunting, especially in the dark.

    Conan The Barbarian.
Honestly one of the best scores ever written for film.

    And obviously, LOTR.

Bram Stoker's Dracula also had a fantastic score.

And a very bizarre film score that I quite loved, was from the film Ravenous, which was scored by Damon Albarn of all people!

for me, films with original scores are best. 'the mission', 'the untouchables' (both ennio morricone) and 'mishima' (philip glass) spring to mind. the music used for the lightsaber battle in 'the phantom menace' (john williams) stirs the auld blood.

that brian eno track used in '28 days later' and 'heat'. in fact, all the music used in heat.

also, soundtrack wise - 'repo man', the hilarious juicy banana track 'i'm a bad man' just gets me every time. it's got a killer groove as well.

jebsus, how could i forget? john carpenter's music for 'assault on precinct 13', 'the thing' and 'halloween'. love that synth stuff.

Trainspotting was great but another Danny Boyle film with a top soundtrack was
The Beach.Although I was very disappointed to find out the main theme/score
from the flim,ANGELO BADALAMENTI's score was not on it.Then I did some investigating to find out where I could get the score from the film and it turns out there was a separate "Original Soundtrack Score" released which didn't have of any of the music from the other soundtrack. It's very rare though and I haven't been able to get my hands on it,amazon don't even have it.

I forgot to name some of my other favourite's which have already been mentioned,
Pi and the excellent Requiem for a Dream. The main score from Pi and all of Requiem for a Dream were composed by the multi talented Clint Mansell ex front man from Pop Will Eat Itself. His haunting theme from Requiem for a Dream was used for the trailer in LOTR Two Towers. He also composed the main theme from The Hole and has worked on other various films.

Out of Sight has a very laid back soundtrack by David Holmes - actually a lot of Stephen Soderbergh's (sp?) movies have decent soundtracks. I prefer when a film has a great score rather than just a good selection of songs by different artistes (cough Danny Boyle cough).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,397 ✭✭✭✭azezil

    Moulin Rouge
    Run Lola Run

pfffft Donnie Darko there's only 1 song remixed 18 times :p (good song though ;))

God. Film music eh? Well 'tis hard to say as there is so much incidental music from some of the great composers used in all sorts of films (e.g. Ride of the Valkyries in 'Apocalypse Now', the excerpt from 'Marriage of Figaro' in 'Shawshank Redemption', 'O mio bambino caro' from 'Gianni Schicchi' in 'Philadelphia'... although I suppose the complete score in 'Amadeus' could hardly be described as incidental to the storyline). Also, the fact that I know nothing about films probably doesn't help.

Off the top of my head, these occur to me as a few brilliant uses of music that I would associate more with the film than the original composer:

John Williams- the violin solo theme in Schindlers List
The Tango in Scent of a Woman
The Cavatina in The Deer Hunter
The Wedding March from The Sound of Music
    The Flying Theme from E.T.

Hmm. I know I will think of a few more as soon as I submit this. But enough's enough.

Donnie Darko's soundtrack is quite good
While it's not a movie the soundtrack to Band of Brothers is absoultely fantastic.Very moving.
Black Hawk Down's soundtrack is excellent.
One movie i would watch just for the song at the closing credits is Proof of Life (Russel Crowe, Meg Ryan). The song is the closing credits is called "I'll be your lover too" by Van Morrisson. I just LOVE this song, has some excellent guitar. The movie wasnt great but i love that song

The music by Bernard Herrmann in Hitchcock films is great for adding to the atmospher esp. Vertigo. He also did the music to Taxi Driver
Bonnie and Clyde- well it's mostly 'Foggy mountain breakdown' by flatt and scruggs, but ye can't beat that eh?
    Apocalypse now
    Pulp fiction
Lost in translation- good recent one, most of it by Kevin Shields i think
