registering with DCOP

Think I might have a lead on what's causing KDE to forget everything on logout. It may be completely off the mark, but when I run
    kbuildsycoca --incremental

I get a message error that says
kbuildsycoca is unable to register with DCOP

    .
I couldn't get anything useful from Google, just other people with the same message but no fix.

Has anyone else been on file-association parole and had to register with DCOP? How does one enable it?

Well, I ran dcopserver and dcop then ran kbuildsycoca again, this time without error, but a fat lot of good it did. One reboot later and everything I changed is unremembered once again. Aaaaaaagh! Hopefully KDE 3.2 might fix this crap :(
