Okay, got this letter today, confirming some details of the new packages.

As an eircom broadband starter customer, you already know the benifits of broadband Internet access with eircom. Now, those benfits will be even better with your FREE upgrade to eircom broadband home plus.

eircom broadband starter is being phased out, to be replaced from March 1st with our new broadband home plus service. We will also introduce a new service on March 1st, broadband home starter. With your FREE upgrade to eircom broadband home plus, you'll get significant new benfits every month -- at no extra cost.

Download capacity DOUBLED to 8GB per month -- at no extra cost!

As an eircom broadband home plus customer, you can download up to 8GB of information per month. Thats an additional 4GB of Internet content every month, equating up to a total of

    - 4 million typical pages of plain text, or
    - 80,000 graphic-heavy, or
    - 400 broadband quality movie trailers, or
    - 70 hours of broadband quality streaming video, or
    - 2,000 mp3 music files

And tht's not all. With eircom broadband home plus, you'll enjoy a contention ratio of 24:1 which means a higher quality of service as half as many people are sharing the service with you; and a dedicated lo-call technical helpdesk number - 1890 260 260. You may also visit http://broadbandsupport.eircom.net anytime for technical support.

You will be automatically upgraded to eircom broadband home plus between Monday Feb 23rd and Wednesday Feb 25th between the hours of 10pm and 2am. There will be a brief service interruption of up to 15 minutes while your upgrade is being performed.

We hope you enjoy these great new features available to eircom broadband home plus customers. For more information about your FREE upgrade to eircom broadband home plus or our other broadband products please visit www.eircom.ie/broadbandchanges.

    _____________

Eircom broadband home plus: available from 1st March @54.45 per month (incl.VAT) with 8GB download limit, 24:1 contention, lo-call 1890

Eircom Broadband starter available from 1st March @39.99 per month (incl.VAT) with 4GB download limit, 48:1 contention, 1550 helpdesk

Download information in excess of your monthly quota may be charged at 3.6c (incl. VAT) per MB.

I got that letter too. Funny that there is no mention of how one would go about downgrading...........

yeah... that was my first reaction too..... lol... trying to get people to stay at €54.45 a month...... but if they dont enforce caps, then the €39.99 a month option would indeed be very tempting..... about time that they actually started to bring prices down.... And the reduction in contention ratio is certainly a positive move.

I think they have realised that they also need customers to take up the DSL too...lol.....

They are certainly trying to milk as much value from their network/customer base as they can before they decide to re-float ....

does that mean that resellers of eircom's service will also be upgraded to 24:1, or is it just eircom's own customers? (or does anyone know?)

Resellers will have to pay 15 euros for every one they place on the lower spec 50:1 product. No charge is incurred if they put people on the 24:1 product.

So essentially what was the bitstream 50:1 service is being upgraded to 24:1 and a new 50:1 service is being introduced (even though it is identical to the earlier product).

Do you mean 48:1, or is 50:1 a completely new contention ratio that they are introducing?

I wonder if Netsource customers will move to 1mb lines also on March 1st.

Am extremely tempted to move to the eircom 1mb offer if Netsource dont upgrade existing customers from 512k to 1mb also.
