Anyone know where I can go to get emulators for various consoles without needing a zipdisk to open the files??

    Zipdisk?
You use a program called Winzip
to open .zip files. You dont need a zipdisk:confused:

What do you think Winzip is??? It's a f**king zipdisk. I want to know if anyone knows where to get emulators that don't require a zipdisk

most emulator roms are zipped, but often you dont need to unzip them to play. Eg. Mame

.zip files DO NOT need a zip disk... winzip is SOFTWARE that unzip .zip files

    Zipdisk:

    Winzip:
    winzip.jpg

One is a handy little disk that you can throw at people without damaging it. The other is software for decompressing files

    You sir, are wrong.

And bloody rude too. These people know what they're talking about and are trying to help you. Obviously you don't appreciate that so why don't you use Google to look up stuff for yourself.
then explain to me how I could not use the emulators that I downloaded?
Incompetence? Try installing Patience version 1.3, Gratitude v4 and PleaseNThanks.

    It is what it's.

Fine then, I might have been wrong but that still doesn't answer my question. How did the emulators not run then?

No it doesn't answer your question. It does point out to you that the original answer that you rudely dismissed is worth re-reading. However you are a moron so this has not occurred to you.

    Purplemonkey :

I'll pretend to ignore the rest of this thread, and just offer a couple of helpful hints. Given that I work on a helpdesk and troubleshoot stuff like this every day, you *may* want to take these comments on board.

We'll be able to help you sort out your problem much more easily if you tell us:
a)what emulators you're trying to run,
b)what roms you're having problems with,
c)what, if any, error messages you're getting.

I run a few emulators and know a bit about them, and there's people on here who know loads more about them. Ask the right way, and someone'll help you sort the problem.

different emulators require different files to be put in certain places.... it'll take too long to go through them all, how about firing some of these profound questions to the forums of the emulators you are talking about?!

kinda confusing alright, especially when mame reads the roms even if they are zipped, they don't need to be unzipped at all, not sure about other emulators though

reminds me of a my first day at secondary school, early in the morning we had teachers explaining the new time table, one subject was called "Technical Drawing" which was abbreviated to "TD". Later in the evening we had a History lesson, where each student began by reading various parts of the textbook(some basic irish politics). A rather dumb and bimbo type girl had her opportunity, while reading a section on the dáil she saw the opportunity to show of her new found knowledge in the form of the abbrevaiated TD ( Teachtai Dáil ), which she clearly and proudly read as "Technical Drawing"

Maybe hes trying to run the emulators from inside the winzip program itself. You need to extract/unzip the whole lot to a folder then run it from there.

First of all, I want to apologise to everyone for my rudeness. I base it completly on the hours of frustration. Sorry:(

I went to a russian website and got emulators for the Sega MegaDrive and the SNES. For some reason, the files won't open or run. There is no error message, so I thought it's because my computer doesn't have the proper program to open it.

Any help is always appreciated. Again I'm sorry for any way that I have offended anyone

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 902 ✭✭✭thesteve

    1. download winzip from here and install it.

    2. read up on the emulator you are using, i am familiar with Mame but not the others... they usually have a specific place for the roms (game files) to be placed before the software will read them

    3. if it's a case that you can't even open the software, you might trying finding it again on a more stable site, the zip files might be corrupt

i'm sure a more knowagable Sega gamer might be able to help you out some more........

Thats sounds real dodgy , run a virus scan then delete those files.
Most of the popular emus have their own sites. Allways try and get it off them, at least to make sure you have the latest version.

For sega get Gens = http://gens.consolemul.com
and Snes get Znes = http://www.zsnes.com/
They should run fine for ya.

    Aha!

If it's SNES or Megadrive you're looking for, I can help.

For SNES I suggest either SNES9x or ZSNES as the emulators, and for Megadrive I use KGen or Genecyst.

Now, *all* SNES/Megadrive emulators that I've used require the files to be unzipped (by using either Winzip or something similar, eg PKUNZIP). Most of the emulators have a load screen where you can browse to whatever folder you store your roms in and then double click to open them.

The actual file formats used for the roms are *.smc for SNES games and *.smd for Megadrive/Genesis.

    Hope this helps :)

Course you could also try www.zophar.net which lists just about every emulator for every platform. It also lists the most recent versions, how it rates against the others and links to the homepage. Its the only site I use really.

As for emus, Zsnes will work no prob with zipped roms. I'd recommend zsnes over snes9x as well. But thats really just personal preference as they've both got 99% of games emulated perfectly, theres only a very few chip specific ones left to be implemented.

In my opinion megadrive and snes emulation is one of the most satisfying areas to get into, the emulators are very very easy to use and compatibility is brilliant. Theres also a massive library of fantastic games for both systems. Anybody just has to try Shadowrun, Chronotrigger or Front Mission to see what I mean.

Once your a bit more comfortable mucking about with emus, ini files and roms you can move onto some of the more complicated emulators like Winuae and the raft of N64 options. Oh and also try Steem the atari st emulator, tremendous selection of games and the community on the various websites are really helpful.

    Enjoy

    Chris

Probably know the site you're on about (not telling though!!).

    Re the MD games...
download Gens, as bus77 suggested. Then once you've it finally open, click on 'Open ROM' (or press Ctrl+O) and select the zipped ROM folder. Should open automatically without arsing about with WinZip.

Just after getting into MD emulation this week. Need a verdamt USB controller for SF2!! :ninja:
