Why do basssits bother with buying effects pedals. there's no need and it's just a waste of $$$ in my book

There are alot of subtle effects that sound great with bass.

And you think hours of guitar fretwank is justified? It gets boring listening to sub-standard guitarists playing monotonous lead after monotonous lead, all the while groping for some sort of adulation and understanding that what they're doing is "emotional" and played "with feeling".

If your bass player starts f*cking around with effects, they're probably bored by what they have to play/endure and are just trying to make it interesting for themselves. ;)

a subtle synth effect on a bass can sound amazing.

Nothing wrong with experimentin with effects. I do agree that %99 of the time effects are not needed and can end up sounding pants on bass. No harm in your own bedroom.

Also on the rare occasion that a bass player does get to play a solo the right effects can be wicked.

My personal experiance. I bought a zoom 607 pedal to try afew effects. Didn't like the result. plus having the thing in the loop alone destroys tone. So this has been downgraded to my tuner and it does a gr8 job as ! :D

Now i'm considerin buyin a bass v amp pro or a pod xt pro to go with my trace elliot 500w power amp. Perhaps the ampeg amp models will sound in some way decent. Better than my current preamp maybe (another trace elliot). At least if it doesn't i hav my analogue preamp.

And don't start tellin me not to bother with digital preamps and buy the real thing cos i simply am not goin to spen €2000 odd on an amp. I'm just lookin for something that sounds good. I know they're only simulations etc etc etc. and sure you can do loads with these gizmos. (then again when they new one comes out it renders your old model obsolete and worthless but who cares if it sounds gud!) :D

    Distroted bass sounds lovely tbh.

As does a wee bit of reverb or flange

Have a listen to almost any Muse song, especially the main riffs to Hysteria and Plug in Baby and you'll see what a pedal can do.

yeah He's a great bassist I admit that's one of the exceptions of good use with a pedal.

Damn! It sounds like a marriage! :D

As far as i know Dave Ellefson got that sound on Dawn Patrol by messing with a
DD-2 (Boss Digital Delay) - but I could be wrong...

effects are deadly on bass!! you must not play bass or have a good enough ear to notice the difference, you just take those fantastic bass sounds for granted.

as was said above they are subtle but VERY effective.

I can't believe there are still ppl thinkin that ya shouldn't use effects on a bass....

I thought that for years then got back into playin.... messed about for a month or two and then got a Brat vII distortion and a Boss Enhancer / Limiter pedal.... the difference is remarkable just from the limiter.... and as for the wacky **** I can do now, combining the two..... its fcukin deadly.....!!!

On another note, I'd advise anyone in a speed/trash Metal or Punk band to check out that Boss Limiter Pedal 99.jpg

If ya like to have a very sharp/distinct sound, but don't like the twang ya get from uppin' the treble/mid range... its yer only man! ;)

yeah, i was thinking of getting a pedal like that to control the sound a bit, i like a nice crunchy, solid feel to the low end, whats the best way to achieve that without loosing out on warmth?
