Getting a used Car checked by Independent Mechanic

    Hi,

A relative told me that his next door neighbour was selling a car..I am in the market for one. Its a used VW Golf, 1997, two lady owners, 5 door, 39000 on the clock, NCT until the end of this year, taxed until May, alrm, c/l. etc...

I viewed the above today and it is in excellent condition..Now, I've been given the option of buying it (seeing im the only one who knows about it) and considering it greatly..

What I want to do is get the engine and undercarraige checked just to make sure its ok... Now my parents are in the AA and they offer a "used car call out service" but its pricey and they take the car away to test it...

Does anyone know of a firm that does it for less than the AA's price (268 euro)...

    Thanks...

I can't help with your question but that AA price is a rip-off. The AA partner company in Austria (ÖAMTC) do those checks for free for members provided you go to them (rather than them coming to you).

'97 golf with 39,000 miles won't give you any trouble. I've got a '94 with 104k on it, still going strong...
