    Hey,

Anyone caught the best new show of 2003 on TG4 Friday nights?

You really have to hand it to TG4 lately (Nip/Tuck, One Tree Hill, The OC, The Wire, Oz and a bunch of leave-your-brain-at-the-door sitcoms), but Carnivale really is the cream of the crop.

This and Dead Like Me were my favourite new shows of last year.

Everything else on American TV seems to have become so predictable and dull lately; it's great when something really stands out.

Anyway, just checking to see if anyone else has caught on...?

I've been watching it too. It's fantastically well made - great production values. Sure it's slow moving but the pace is right for the story it's telling - there's a neat sense of mystery. One of my weekly highlights now - HBO once more show their stuff. And TG4 retain my high opinion.

Yes I am a huge Carnivale fan....never miss it :D
I think it is an excellent show, great cast and very well made.

Anyone have any theories on the show......like what is behind Ben's dreams and what is the big mystery around Scudder?

AFAIK there are only 16 episodes in this season.
Anyone know if HBO are making a second season?

A second season is due this September, yes. There are 12 episode in season one.
HBO (like the other US premium channels) do shorter seasons than the broadcast networks.

We do learn a lot more by the end of the series - I probably shouldn't say what I think the dreams mean, as there's a lot more information given in future weeks. It turly is appointment TV though. I've been trying to get as many of my friends to tune in as I can. (I think there's something about the migrant lady coughing up the coins in the first episode which really makes you sit up and pay attention!)

By the way, do pop along to: http://www.hbosurveys.com/surveys/carnivale_end.htm
to help encouage HBO to stick with the show.

It had a critically acclaimed first year, but audience figures were so-so. HBO were impressed by a large online presence, so the more feedback on this one, the better for the Carnies' future!

Well, to be fair, new ones won't start in the US until September (must be filming about now) - 12 eps a year is too low, though. I could happily watch 24 of this show!
Last year it took six months to film the first series, which is quite long for 12 episodes, but then the production values are very high as Ixoy says.

DVD of first series is set for release in late Summer as well, which should include a fair amount of deleted and unused scenes, I hear. Of course, the other added bonus with Carnivale (and most other HBO shows) is the decent length - most come in at almost a full hour, and the pilot was even longer still.

Ah, just realised I forgot Everwood from the TG4 decent-shows list I gave at the start of the thread.

Love Carnivale. It is a very different show to what you normally see. Very slow but very entertaining and watchable. Course more does seem to be happening recently, must be coming near the end of the season if only 12 were made.
