Ive been reading alot of stuff on MMA in the last few weeks on the web. Just wondering if anyone out there trains in this sort of style(s)? Could ye give your opinion on it and any details of clubs around the country?

I train in John Kavanagh's Brazilian Jiu Jitsu club (http://www.irishbjj.com)
It's realistic, to the point, professionally coached with no fluff or padding.

John and a few others from the club post on www.irmac.net, that'd be a better place to ask.

I hear lots of good things about J Kavanagh. I have to go to see how people train at this Gym.

Do you think it is possible to start anytime of the year ?

Can you share your experience a little bit ? When did you start, how did you improve, did you have any prior experience with another martial art ?
Is John coaching himself ? Are you wearing Kimonos like in Judo ...

    Cheers,

    :)

    >>I hear lots of good things about J Kavanagh. I have to go to see how people train at this Gym.

Great - beginner's class is Mondays and Tuesdays, 7:30 to 8:30, or you can drop down to any class to watch, or train if you think you're up for it.

Defo - just turn up. Note change of location - it's covered in the announcements folder of the forum you can reach from www.irmac.net. (I know that's vague - the site's blocked from where I work.)

    >> Can you share your experience a little bit ? When did you start, how did you improve, did you have any prior experience with another martial art ?

Did the usual TKD / Karate route, a few of my friends started BJJ about two years back and I said I'd give it a shot. You'll roll (think spar) the first day - everyone's friendly and injuries are rare. I remember for the first two weeks getting little cramps in my forearms and back. I wouldn't say I'm great, but my BJJ career has included my final year of uni and starting a new job, so my attendance wasn't the best. Check the irmac forum - muchos posted there on the subject.

John does all the coaching unless he flies in other coaches. (These guys tend to be quite good.) Kimono optional - most train in shorts and t-shirt.

Have a read of www.irishbjj.com, www.straightblastgym.com and www.irmac.net 's forum - they're good for general info, and John posts fairly regularly on irmac.

Anything you think I could help with, feel free to ask.
