    Hi guys,

I've a few questions for you..

I'm going out with someone at the moment, and this is the first time
Im actually going out with somone on the 14th Feb.

We've been going out 4 months now, and i've no idea what to do for it.

My friends reckon i should buy the card etc but not go out for dinner as
everywhere pushes up the price on the 14th.

I've not got a whole load of cash so maybe this is a good idea .. or is it?

Some of my friends reckon she'll be pissed off if i don't make some sort of effort.

I'm not even sure if i should get a card as it seems kinda corny and she doesn't seem like the type of girl who'd care less about it.

Do you recommend a.) a card
    b.) dinner

If b.) Can anyone recommend a good restaurant in dublin, reasonably price (if possible)

if you're short on cash why not try making it?
you can do a simple pasta dish or something like that. bit of wine, candles.
home can be made much more romantic than a fancy restaurant.
if you feel the need, buy her something small, but try get something that means something to her.

oh and btw, you left it waaaayyy too late :P

Get a card and arrange dinner somewhere nice for next week... most of the really nice places will be booked out at this stage, but if you want a good meal at a decent price try Pacinos on Sufflok St... they generally don't take bookings either (I doubt they'd change that for valentines day), its a nice affordable restaurant and not too rushed.

I'm with my lass 2 years in a week. So only one valentines day down, but this will be her first card. Most people realise its a commercial whizz, so focus on the nice things not the expensive things, particularly if you can't afford it. Home made meal...

Do ya know what you should get her - a lil Me To You teddy bear - they are the most adorable little things, they also have Me To You cards (get them in Clinton Cards on Henry St.) You've prolly seen 'em before maybe, they are the lil grey tatty teddies, trust me, she'll be putty in your hands! :)

ya should have got her something last week if you where short on cash ....

do you know if she got you anything? ... *this baffles me ... why are all the guys on boards now panicing bout what to get der girls? ... do the girls plan in advance or do they just not bother?*

organise a very romantic massage ... candles ... wine ... music ... NO interuptions .... introduce a single rose into the whole massage thing ... *ever see 40 days and 40 nights?* ... way romantic ... plus the rose is a keep sake ....

not too expensive ... probably bout 20 euros ... pending on the massage oil :)

    Gud luck!

Thanks for all the suggestions guys,

Afraid the making dinner thing is out :(
we both live with our parents..

I appreciate all the tips about home made dinner, candles around the house etc,
only problem is , no house to do it in...

I think i'm gonna try a few restaurants tomorrow morning

I did mention this to her during the week, the option was to go
out on the sunday night and book a restuarant or go out on sat..

She said sat. without no hesitation and then later said, you
*do know it's valentines on sat. <hint>

I do think i should make the effort going from what i've heard,,
if it costs me my last €200 i may as well..

in saying that, i think i'll leave the card out..

Cheers for the tip kali, i think i'll give them a try tomorrow,,

    Managed to get a restaurant!

It's supposed to be a nice spot and "moderately expensive"

    THanks again for the advice!

    holy ****, lucky you.

dinner is a waste of money imo, she cant keep it, she can only eat it and crap it out, but then i guess i'm nothing like most women, so i shouldn't really be giving advice :)

you can have perfectly good memories without wasting money on dinner. its a nice thought on any other day, but he's only taking her out cause its valentines.

cynic? yes, but whatcha gonna do about it?

its a nice thought on any other day, but he's only taking her out cause its valentines.

I would've much preferred to go out on a different night,

As most lads'll tell you, they're not into the whole valentine's thing.

It seemed important to her and that's why i did it.

Next year i'll hopefully have moved out in which case i'll cook at home or
    something, more personal.

In saying that the restaurant was v. nice, they weren't rushing people in and
out but as can be expected it was a set menu and vis a vis , very expensive

She seemed to appreciate that'd i'd made the effort though.

She was cool with no card / flowers.

How did everyone else get on?

I was being told last night about this girl (25) who'd been seeing her fella for a few months. He got her some floerws during week, nothing on the day, but they met up he was a bit "off" and asked her why she was off with him. She wasn't impressed. Next day he called over with a dozen roses to go out for a walk. She dumped him. This wasn't premeditated from the previuos week and there were no probs between them..So it seems this was a reaction to teh valentines thingy. Bit drastic?

If someone dumps you cos you didn't buy her a bunch of posies on Valentine's day she can stuff herself IMO. I'd be laughing at her.

Just an aside for those in Dublin - Il Baccaro is a very cool Italian restaurant on Meeting House Sq (in Templebar). You need to book 2-3 weeks in advance for Vals night, but it's a good place.

They kept their normal (excellent) menu - cost 65 yoyos for starters, mains, deserts and coffees for 2 - including a glass of wine each (weren't drinking much)... now that's damn good, considering one of the mains was a 20 euro steak ;)
