Is Chart Track fair?

    Here's the facts:

This week Morello sold (as the relevant shops confirmed) over 200 CD's between Tower and Road alone, 124 in Carlow, 72 in Waterford, 40 in Mullingar, 40 in Dundalk, 150 ( ish ) in Monaghan and 46 in Killarney plus whatever went out the door on Thursday.

Niall did a check with all the shops on Wednesday, had a count of 683, and asked the dude from Chart Track what would that have gotten us this week: he replied No. 6

All the shops were eventually sold out:

We sold something between 700 and 800 copies of which only 249 were recognised. Actual position in the charts: No. 20 - unofficial No. 4

This happened because most of the shops in which we had the biggest sales (including Tower and Roads) weren't picked up in the random selection for this week.

I understand the system works the same for everybody but only a major distribution deal would allow a band to have their CDs in ALL the shops.

Also, a sample is supposed to be "representative".

This system penalised our sales of a 60/70 %

    Now, is this fair?

    Your thoughts please

    Alex

I thought the sampling was discontinued. Given that most shops have bar code readers it is relatively simple for every shop to make a return to Chart Track. This means that you should be able to get as close as real time information on your sales

Could it be a part of the great rock'n'roll swindle?

presumably the same applies for all records

700 sales would have got you to no. 4 under the current system
if all sales were counted for everyone then 700 sales probably wouldn't get you so high (though maybe still higher than 20)

the Irish charts are a total backwater anyway - no point getting hung up on them.

The Irish charts may be a backwater but as Morello have only released the CD in Ireland then it is a measure of commercial sales success for the band.

By the way, did you release a ringtone? Apparently ringtones are outselling CD singles these days!!

Be Happy that you/they/whoever sold that many and 700 or 800 people are willing to buy the cd and the fact that you are getting your music heard, to be in the charts is a bonus and from what you are saying this isn't fair but this many cds sold is deadly!

    My 2 Cents !

As per quote above. The same rules apply to everyone in the charts. So the same applies for everyone. I wouldn't be moaning though. You've sold a lot of CDs and it's not becoming when you stamp your feet and say 'It's not fair'.
