Chorus fail to renew Wireless Phone Licence

As suspected with the trouble Chorus is in (Examiner called in) and non-ability to get any new powerNet over last year, I got a letter yesterday (12th February 2004).

    It boils down to:

    * Chorus was unable to renew Wireless Phone licence
    (Did they try hard?)

    * You ought to get an Eircom Line by end of February.

    * You can get Chorus phone service via the Eircom Line
(Why? The main reasons for leaving the Eircom Copper was high line rental and virtually unusable modem, poor connectivity even at 19.2 or 22K with multiple redialing cranking up bill by 3minutes every 10 seconds)

    * There won't be anything by end of March.

I expect by summer Chorus will only offer TV.

Now I need to find a phone company and figure how to get an Internet connection that works.

And EsatBT, an alleged phone supplier can't offer a service unless you signup to their competitor they are "rubbishing" Eircom, FIRST!

Seemingly we are years behind in unbundling the local loop from Eirom, yet the only true alternative apart from some Digital NTL cable areas is going out of business in end of March 2004!

I wouldn't mind Eircom except our phone line went faulty (oK on voice) and was unusable with modem. They couldn't fix it (bar I suppose digging up road), or really admit there was a problem. Anyhow, SAME modem on same settings (unchanged) plugged into the Chorus box was perfect.

    I'm doomed.

NO Internet at home from March Arrrrrrggh!

Off to ring eircom and get dodgy wire reconnected (at least it works for voice and is cheaper than Mobile).

    Eircom want €24.95 to reconnect...

BUT.. they won't guareentee any particular level of modem quality

They won't refund the money if my Internet connection doesn't work and I cancel

    They say I need ISDN.

    I don't

I don't need two channels and 2.5 times the rental.

Besides ISDN is a special kind of 144K modem and if they can get that to work (which uses the SAME wires in to the house)

Then the analog modem will work at 33 .. 49 k fine.

    Doomed.

Ask Shannon Broadband to take the entire Wireless thing over lock stock and barrel. Shannon Broadband are installing the fibre rings round Limerick, this would get them some customers pronto. Website is Here

Offer Chorus €1 for it . Unbundle the lot in one fell swoop.

Comreg would reissue the licence no probs to Shannon Broadband

    Heh, Heh

    What is this network worth?
What sort of infrastructure does it contain?
Are the base stations rented @ probably €10k / annum or owned by Chorus?

It ran on a special WLL frequency allocated to Chorus and runs very well by all accounts. It is not scaleable beyond 64k per channel but it has full telco switching and a number range .

It is a proper switched telephone system that runs on Wireless and generates line rental and call revenues in other words :D .....except that it is supposed to be switched off shortly .

Up to 2 channels per subscriber box. Seems to work as well as ISDN and to be a sort of wireless equivalent of it.

The subscriber box uses an RJ45 to connect to the outside aerial rather than coax (is the aerial a complete "ISDN TE wireless emulator"?) and has 12V rechargable battery for several hours or more operation when mains fails. Two analog phone sockets on subscriber box.

It must be digtal as the analog modem always has "zero errors" and always 49K, meaning it is running on average 20% faster than a "good" analog line which is never error free and never gives a full 56K (End to End other than Internet dialup at a digital Exchange, 22K is good and 33K mode is best that can be acheived)

Will this apply to Thier Powernet service? I have both. Powernet uses wireless technology aslo.

There are rumours that Powernet will be taken over. I don't know. It is a separate licence. About 30 companies have been licenced recently to provide commerical Wireless LAN (as apposed to private or free 802.11 WiFi which CAN NOT be charged for). Much of this may be for inter office commercial links to replace Leased Line, rather than Internet Wireless Broadband for end users.

I do know it has been nearly impossible to get Powernet due to Chorus not having the gear.

Yeah so ive heard. I got it about 3 years ago!

Tis a good service. Has never been down.

This phone thing is annoying though. Seeing as how i live in the country (sort of) and am going to have to get a telephone line installed for the first time!
