DSL Dowload Speed - 6 kb per sec!

    Hi,

I had broadband installed today, and have since achieved the magnificent speed of 6k per sec, and just every now and then it reaches the dizzy heights of 16k per sec.

You can imagine how unimpressed I am, especially considering my ISDN was working a treat. I only switched to keep my Internet costs down, and to increase the download speed.

Has anyone else any experience of this crap service? The Eircom customer care people were incredibly rude - where next?

    Thanks,

    MRed

is there a reason for that test to be so fast. it is blistering for dialup and had no effect on lag or internet browsing. i normally download at 1.4kb/s but the attachment shows something a bit different

I get 4.8Mb/s on that!!! Actually it is too small a file and IE starts downloading in background to cache, while you decide where to save, and you are measuring (mostly) the speed of your own IE cache!

If there is an error in DNS, Gateway, Subnet or "ADSL /Ethernet box" settings you will get slow speeds.

Also USB to ADSL are a bad idea.

The 6K per sec was actually measured using that official test, DMC. I have since discovered that I needed to increase the setting on my "recieve buffers" (W98) from 2000 ish to 32000 ish. Worked a dream, I'm now downloading 1MB in 10-20 seconds.
    Thanks for the help anyway.

Why so - would performance be better over Ethernet?

    Kewl, nice one.

I presume you have the Eircom Netopia modem, nice device as it has dual USB/ Ethernet inputs. I have one too and its great (bought it off a lad in Navan!)

I prefer Ethernet over USB for these reasons:
    • No drivers for new devices
    • Doesn't drain power
    • Less liable for breakdown
    • Ethernet to device speed upto 100mbps (on a 10/100 card)
    • USB max is 8-12 mbps
    • Frees up for devices that only work on USB (camera, Psion Wavefinder etc)
    • Power drain
    • Power
    • and did I mention power? :D

Also USB devices use up CPU cycles. And if your CPU is maxing out (due to video encoding/gaming etc) its possible that you'll lose your internet connection temporarily.
