i have to say that he is/was possibly the best bassist to have ever lived.
i like metallica alot but the music that i really appreciate are the cliff burton days.
i think its a waste that the band as they were have now reduced themselves to the pitiful world of commercial modern metal. if thats what you want to call it. personally modern crap would be a better title.
anyway he is my fave and ranks in my top five.
i think its wrong that people like metallicas new stuff simply because they're fans. thats bull if you ask me
i could do a better job and trust me thats saying something
so come on my peeps let me know what you think
    agree?disagree?
if you disagree then i strongly suggest that you listen to orion and then listen to frantic and try and argue the point to me that they are of the same standard. never
    i apologise if i sound opinionated(assuming thats a word!)
i just love him thats all.

He should just have played guitar and known his place with the bass, 'fancy' bass sounds shyte unless it's funky dirty harry style bass IMO

Some of it. As well as being one of the finest bassists ever to play Metal he was an accomplished writer of music too. Probably his most noteworthy composition is the middle section of Orion, which to this day sends a shiver down my spine.

At the moment, I'm trying to figure out was that a topic praising Cluff Burton or was it an attack on Metallica's new stuff, of which I am a big big fan.

Anyway, yeah Cliff was an incredible player but I wouldn't rank him in the top 10 bass players of all time. Top 20 maybe, but not the top 10.

Excellent, a top 20 bass player list. Let's be having it ;)

as for the attack on metallicas new stuff ya sorry to say but it was. and it was me praising cliff because he did that band justice and to this day the only person i respect in the line-up is kirk and thats coz hes not a **** talking idiot like the rest of them. forgive me if ye thing im wrong.
ya he wrote call of the ktulu.excellente!
dont worry about it im kinda stressed out myself bad day in college and more to go.
speaking of which i shoul do some work ill be back here tomorrow anyways

Ah, Kirk can't write riffs like Hetfield used to be able to. And Ktulu was by Hetfield/Ulrich/Burton/Mustaine.

Burton also wrote the intro solo to Fade to Black!!

He also played the last solo on Orion, done on bass, the cool intro to Damage Inc. - I dug up my old Cliff 'Em All video last week, haven't watched it in years. The man was a class act, no doubt about it.

i was under the impression that any songs with Mustaine in the credits meant it was basically his main riff, forgetaboutit, main riff = song = Mustaine is your only man. He told them not to use his stuff and they did...

    so

if so let me know what you think if not let me know what you think anyway.

Cliff was IMO, the only talent in Metallica. (Remember, i said IMO, so dony go tearing this to shreds just yet *L*) I think Mustaines riffs were too kinda..well, cock rock for want of a better description. I love Cliffs classical influence and the man was easily, again IMO, the best bassist of all time. Tbh i hate slap and pop bass, i think its wanky ****e that needs to be confined to the 70's, and only played by show off tossers. And dammit is that cliff em all video still available?? I had a lend of it years ago..absolutely un-smurfin believable!!

Yeah, they released Cliff Em All on DVD sometime last year. I'd love to see what would have happened with Metallica if he hadn't been killed. Would they still have done Load? Of course, none of the Newstead influence would be there.

I dont think Newstead HAD much influence tho. The only respected Metallica album he played on was AJFA, and it has practiacally zero bass. Everything adter that album was well..s*ite to be honest. And its a shame cause i think Jason was probably the only one left in the band with musical integrity then.

What??? The 'Black Album' is one of the best selling albums ever...But yeah, Met were a bit harsh on Jason when they mixed him outta most songs..

    WTF?
Only respected album was And Justice For All...? Everything after that has been asbolute shít.
    [edit]
    meh, you're talkin about Newstead.

Well actually wasn't it Bob Rock who wrote the bassline to Frantic and most of St.Anger as a stand in. I.e He's not a bass player.

Yeah, Bob Rock wrote all the basslines for the St. Anger album, so that cant be used in this argument. And speaking as a bassist heavily influenced by all of Metallicas work,i feel that Jason was the better bassist IMO.I mean,if Cliff was still alive, there never would have been a Black album for Metallica and theyd never be a big as they are today.I think with Jason came a more mainstream feel to Metallica, which i know a load of people hate, but its not always for the worse. As well that,Jason brought a special "something" to Metallica,in the form of a monster stage presence.Just watch any of the Live **** or Cunning Stunts, and well he just makes himself felt onstage, which i feel is the best thing anyone could do.Just out of curiousity, how do you guys feel about Rob?

he made metallica what they are. if it wasnt for his knowledge of odd time signitures and scales, metallica wouldnt be half of what they are, or where should i say
