    Here's the beef...

New Yorker, JESSE MALIN has just confirmed a special acoustic date at Whelans in Dublin for Monday, March 1st ’04.

Jesse made his full Irish debut with a sell-out show with full band at Whelans in January last year and increased his fanbase here further with his ‘Death Or Glory’ show at The Village last March (the tour was titled after The Clash song, 'Death or Glory', which Jesse recorded a version of for a B-Side of his 'Wendy' single. He was a friend of the late Joe Strummer and also features in the video for Joe’s posthumous single, ‘Redemption Song’, along with actor, Matt Dillon, Rancid and many more of Strummer’s New York friends).

Jesse is now set to treat fans to an acoustic show in the intimate setting of Whelans that will include exclusive new material alongside tracks from, ‘The Fine Art Of Self Destruction’, “the debut album of 2002” (UNCUT).

He has been working on his keenly-anticipated follow-up album, tentatively due for release release later this Spring.

Guests on the album include Tommy Stinson (bass player with The Replacements, and now with Guns N Roses) and Howie Pyro (D Generation).

Jesse had previously played in Ireland when he supported Ryan Adams at two dates at Dublin’s Olympia Theatre in November ’02.

Ryan produced ‘The Fine Art Of Self Construction’ (the only album Ryan has chosen to produce so far – he also features on guitar on the title track).

Describing the recording experience Adams said, "Jesse Malin’s songs are so good they hurt my feelings."

Jesse was also on Ryan’s recent UK tour up until Ryan suffered a broken wrist and was forced to cancel his remaining dates (Ryan is currently recovering after successful surgery on his wrist, NME reported last week).

Former Smashing Pumpkin/Hole bass player, Melissa Auf Der Maur (and now acclaimed artist in her own right) also provides backing vocals on Jesse’s album.

Jesse has been a figure amongst New York's film and music set for some time. He's a part-owner of Niagra in New York's East Village where Adams has previously an exhibition of his paintings. He also had a cameo appearance in Martin Scorsese's 'Bringing Out The Dead' in 1999 and counts leftfield film director Jim Jarmusch ('Ghost Dog', 'Down By Law') amongst his inner-circle.

    - Tickets for Jesse Malin (Acoustic) at Whelans on March 1st are €15 (inc. booking fee) and are on sale now from Road Records, Soundcellar, Ticketmaster and usual outlets nationwide. Doors: 8.00pm, Garda Approved ID Essential. Don’t miss.

Jesse will also support Counting Crows at their three sell-out dates at Dublin’s Olympia Theatre on March 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. He previously appeared with them at Fitzgerald Stadium in Killarney last summer.

    - ALBUM REVIEWS:

Jesse Malin - 'The Fine Art Of Self-Destruction' (One Little Indian)

    ****

    From Q Magazine, Dec '02.

"Having spent 10 years in a series of obscure New York punk pop outfits (D-Generation), Bellvue), perhaps Jesse Malin will now benefit from the Ryan Adams touch. He certainly deserves it. Still retaining plenty of blue-collar grime, these folk and country-tinged tunes are melodic, deft and emotive. Obvious parallels to Gold then, but Adams' presence on guitar and knob twiddling duties suggests cap-doffing as much as patronage. What's more, when he declares, "I don't need anyone", on ballad 'Solitaire', his extraordinary vocal performance - shifting from plaintive wail to sandpaper-on-skin-howl - makes it plain he's entirely his own man."

Yip! His live shows are great in a Bruce Springsteen meets Jerry Seinfeld kinda way.

He supported the Crows in Killarney last year as well.
