I understand this is due to launch on Sky from Thursday - should be on 440 for those in Eire. (add channels for the rest).

Ya, apparently Nickelodeon are launching an Irish (opt-out) service too.

Both are carrying colour bars at the moment - MTV Eire has EPG info - but Nick (I guess) is a week or so away.

What is going to be the difference of MTV UK and MTV Eire?

If asked to guess, I'd say mainly adverts.

Viva, Viva+, MTV Pop De, MTV Central De, MTV Italia, Viva Polska, Countdown, Magic (itally), Dance Italy, and a bunch others have the advantage

    1) You don't much understand presenter (We won't call them DJs as they don't pick the music nor play disks).

    2) Free To Air.

I presume you have to actually pay to get MTV "Eire" (sic).

They're called "VJ's" and as it's replacing the MTV that's there already on ch440 it won't be FTA.

Of all the stations with an opt-out, MTV could probably do an Irish version the easiest, and most successfully:

    - The only original content is presentation (what, 5/6 minutes per hour broadcast?)
    - They enjoy a seriously strong brand name here (owing to NTL mainly)
    - There is a rich base of local content (Music by Irish artists) they already have access to
    - They have / had Irish presenters before
    - Lets face it, if TV3 did it, then a music show can't cost all that much!

They could easily do a 'No Disco' type show, or even something to replace TV cubed, or a chart show or something.

    BRING BACK HEADBANGERS BALL

Would Everybody Please Stop using "Eire" - It's bad enough the $ky/english using it!!!

On the MTV note: I doubt "MTV Ireland" will be anymore Irish than "Sky 1 Ireland" or "E4 Ireland"..... Plenty of cheep adds (compared to RTE) for Irish companies.

    BRING BACK HEADBANGERS BALL

That wud make me very happy indeed tho I know in my heart that aint gonna happen:( Ive had satellite since 1990 and since then the biggest dissapointment for me was the breakdown of MTV Europe and the bitter loss of Headbangers Ball/Into The Pit. Even if they did actually bring Headbangers Ball back it would be nothing like the old show ever was.

Rough idea of how the royalty payments work (without any actual figures) here

Does it matter what they call it? They'll still show the same aul sh*te like Ozzy and his fat kids, and that abysmal Newleyweds.

    F*ck 'em and their ads.

Brilliant, and the lovely Nina I think it was who was on the show with him :D

    It was naughty nympho Nina:D

Nina and Ray used to have great fun reading out the shows address every nite particularly the 8UH bit:)

I also loved the pethetic Pat part of the show and the segment where viewers would send in an item that was once given to them by an ex boyfriend/girlfriend and Ray would come up with some way to destroy that item live on television.

The show was so pan-european I loved it.... ah the memories....

But that's not Irish, "MTV Eire" is nonsense.
It should be " MTV Éireann" or in English, "MTV Ireland"

This one has been done to death, true (comes up all the time on
the Sky newsgroup), but the point is still valid.

Now that Sky Ireland is establishing itself a bit more firmly, maybe
we should all send letters off to Mark Deering, Sky's head-man here,
and ask that he liaise with his UK equivalents and have all transponders,
on screen and on-air references and documentation issued with the word
"Ireland" (or "Republic of Ireland") in all cases, and never Éire.

Bad enough to see it still being used, (although much less than 10 years ago) in the
north's News Letter. ("The Eire government is holding talks etc.")
