Paying Motor Tax online

I heard on the news that you will be able to do this from 1 March 2003, following a successful trial in 3 counties.

My question is - paying money on line is fine, but surely part of the traditional taxing your car episode is documenting ownership, insurance and NCT (or perhaps not NCT, according to other recent reports ;)). You either had to physically present these at the local tax office, or send them in by post and get them returned with your new disc. And they always insisted on originals, and they always refused to accept payment until you produced these.

So how do you verify these online? Will you be asked for an insurance certificate number, for example (though would that not imply that they have albeit limited (but live) access to insurance databases, something a lot of people, not least the insurers might be happy about). And if it has taken many years to computerise the penalty points system, what chance is there that there is data integration between the NCT, Vehicle registration records, owner details, etc?

Apologies, didn't realise there was a current thread here with all the answers!
