    Hey all,
Ive noticed alot of bad press as regards Eircom around here, and I would love to get interviews with people whom have had dealings with the company or their employees where they felt misled, lied to, pressured, insulted, anything un-ethical really..

Ive had some experiences myself, and as a trainee Journalist i thought it would be superb to try and expose the dodgy tactics used by employees (and possibly encouraged by the company) to the general public whom dont see much problems past the rental hike etc.
I know according to Comreg.ie they were found to be mis-leading potential customers regarding some company where they were found to have lied about their prices to get customers in

Also, if anyone here works for Eircom and would like to (in totaly privacy) tell me about any encouragement to lie about offers, or even how likely it would be for you to be disiplined for lying, that would be great.

please, any people who can help, please PM me and we can talk more on the matter,

    Adam

Google for "ma bell" and "baby bells".

didnt get the chance to look properly, but it seems to be something to do with telecoms, but what link does that make with Eircom, excusing the fact that Eircom are a telecom company.
is there some kind of ownership link or something?

Read this. Eircom is Ireland's Bell System. Read up on slamming while you're at it. What you're talking about isn't strictly slamming, but a lot of the same tactics are used. (That would be "lying".)

Hardly justified. A request for testimony of unethical practice has absolutely nothing to do with lying.
It is not even an issue of even handed reporting, just because some employees do not engage in underhand tactics does not in any way excuse or balance out those who do or any company policy that may encourage it.

I have had about 5 phone calls from Eircom since Christmas flogging broadband. The sales guys seem to be on commission because they want you to sign up there and then.
I said to a few of them "Whats the catch?, What aren't you telling me?"
They said "What catch?", I said "The one about the 4 GB cap every month".
I asked them were they going to start warning people that they start paying per byte after they download more than 4GB in a period of 1 month.
The only reason why people would choose Broadband over 56K is faster downloads of movies and Software. But the cap basically nullifys the advantage in Ireland.

    That's incorrect.

I'm not defending the cap, but I have broadband for 2 reasons: always on connection and faster downloading of webpages. I think most people are the same as me. At least, anyone else I know who has broadband got it for the same reason as me.

I'm just having a bit of a go, using the Ma Bell reference.

However considering how, badly and one-sidedly reported Open Source software was linked to the MyDoom worm, by an anonymous dipshit on the radio recently, it sorts of puts in perspective sensationalist reporting for me. I'd certainly be an advocate of hearing 'both' sides of the story vis-a-vis any interviewing of Ma Bell employees.... no matter how much I and others would like to see them (the Bells) nailed to the wall.

Me too. Plus the fact that it's the equivalent of a second line (I don't hog the phoneline anymore).

    It is what it's.

I also disagree. It's a lot harder than you think to use 4 gigs. I use the broadband connection very heavily and I've had no problems.

Also, eircom don't actually charge you if you go over the cap (within reason.)

Esat BT are cheaper for everything, i also hate eircom with a passion. Esat has a download limit of 8GB per month and is still cheaper. If you switch your calls over to them aswell, you get the broadband for only 33 Euro a month.

um.. I used 500 megs or so on friday/satrday.
but It's true that a normal user does'nt need to worry about the limit so much ... it's not like they're going to use more than a 125 megs a day.

unless they listen to the radio on line for 2 hours while surfing and then leave Kazza running....
but a normal user would'nt do any thing like that... would they.

it's not like Eircom has advertised it based on these sorts of things...

    *note*
I actualy think that normal users should not have any trouble with 4 gigs if they are only browsing and sending Email.
but having said that the cost is still to high for a capped service ...

If all you are doing is browsing and email it is a very expensive service, they even sell the service based on high-res video in their adverts.

The service I use has a 6gb cap I can easily use that up in less than a week

I am sure there are many Companies both here and in any country that you care to name that you could write a story like that about?

I though the idea of journalism was to seek out the 'truth?' what you are doing is looking for material for a thesis ie that Eircom is bad.

I have now challenged people on here several times who have made wild claims about Eircom to back up their statements with evidence - none have. Dont get me wrong I am no fan of Eircom but it does not help truth or clarity for prejudice and wild claims to be circulated in the absence of hard evidence.

I am sure there is plenty of stuff about Eircom (and lots of other companies) that it would be healthy to air but coming at it with that attitude is not the way to go.
