Eircom's new 'broadband trigger scheme'

Just saw this on the eircom website. Its a kinda survey/demand thing for eircom to bring broadband to communities with less than 1500 people. You have to enter your phone number and location, and once a certain threshold of votes is reached eircom will incorporate that area into it's roll-out plans.

    http://dsltrigger.eircom.ie/

Something I noticed was that if you enter a number of a currently enabled area, they say
eircom broadband is available in your area.
If you would like to order broadband, you can contact the following companies who currently offer DSL Broadband services in Ireland

    eircom www.eircom.ie
    esatbt www.esatbt.ie
    Leap www.leap.ie
    Netsource www.netsource.ie

I was shocked to see eircom advertising alternative ISP's.:)

    Leap www.leap.ie

<offtopic> Since when do Leap offer DSL? </offtopic>

Another anomaly is that broadband appears to be available when checked on this Eircom site but not when checked on the main Eircom broadband site (or IOL).

    eircom launches broadband trigger programme
    • eircom wholesale hosts broadband trigger programme on www.eircom.ie
    • Trigger levels set for first 150 communities with population under 1,500
Tuesday 10th February, 2004. eircom today launched a new wholesale broadband trigger programme on the company’s website, www.eircom.ie. The trigger programme, which has undergone live testing for the past couple of weeks, is designed to allow consumers to directly influence the roll-out of broadband in their towns and communities. Today eircom announced that trigger numbers have been set for the first 150 communities (see attached list and map), with a population of less than 1,500.

A trigger level represents the requisite number of customers needed to enable broadband in a particular area. For the first 150 communities the trigger levels are set at between 200 and 500. This means that customers in these communities can now log on to the website and request broadband to be delivered to their community.

Speaking about the launch of the trigger programme, David McRedmond, eircom Commercial Director said; we announced in December that we were rolling-out broadband to every town in Ireland, with a population over 1,500, by March 2005. Now we are extending that plan to include smaller communities throughout the country. This trigger programme, where local communities elect to have broadband brought to their area, allows eircom to prioritise demand and manage investment efficiently, thereby ensuring that broadband is widely available nation-wide at affordable prices.”

In addition to providing the mechanism for 150 communities to request broadband for their area, the eircom wholesale broadband website also includes the 131 towns (see attached list) which are already broadband enabled and the 80 towns planned to be broadband enabled by March 2005.

    On accessing the eircom wholesale broadband website customers can avail of a number of options;
    - If a town is already broadband enabled, customers can chose from a list of companies offering broadband services, including eircom Retail, to order their service.
    - if a town is in eircom’s current roll-out plan waiting to be enabled, customers can request that eircom prioritise their town. eircom will subsequently advise these customers when their town will be broadband enabled.
    - customers who live in one of the 150 communities for which a trigger level has been set, can vote to have their area added to eircom’s broadband roll-out plan
    - customers who are not currently part of the trigger programme can also register their interest and eircom will take this information into consideration in their ongoing review of the broadband roll-out plans

Once a site hits the requisite trigger, eircom will automatically add this site to its broadband infrastructure build programme, and it would take between 6 to 9 months to build and install broadband thereafter.

yep another eircom cover to claim they are doing something, as most of these are rural they probably suffer from the line quality problems which won't pass the test. my line doesn't pass the test at present (talked to local engineers it will pas up to 5mb dsl but eircom won't install until it passes 10 which considering current offering is 512k and current modems go upto 8mb seems a bit harsh)
so only people with brand new lines and spitting distance of the exchange will pass the test, eircom can then go and tell the gov no-one is taking broadband despite not fixing lines to take it. and that thy have to subsidise it.

700 is the trigger level in Barna County Galway.

Make that a 'never' and an 'ever' .

should the current level not increase when you register your interest? Registered for my family (who are connected to Balrath, Co. Meath, not Westmeath as stated above) but when you stick in the number again it still says 0 for current level.

In addition to providing the mechanism for 150 communities to request broadband for their area, the eircom wholesale broadband website also includes the 131 towns (see attached list) which are already broadband enabled and the 80 towns planned to be broadband enabled by March 2005.
can you attach the list or the link?

my town is in the under 1,500 population up there....
im on the carrigtwohill exchange and all the towns around me are enabled, my town is full of factorys, and i mean full, its got a load of SME's also with plenty of ppl wanting broadband and most of which live within the 5.5km radsl spec..

basically that figure of 1,200 living in carrigtwohill is total horse**** at this stage with the amount of new housing estates that have croped up in the last few years and the ones that are planned will double its size.. i dunno what i can do

if i ring up montly to the dsl sales line they tell me oh yes there has been plenty of interest from people living within that exchange, or if i register my interest in getting broadband via that dsltrigger it still shows 0 out of 420 3 days after me doing it

am i never going to get dsl here?
