'rural broadband' are the first provider of broadband in our area(west of ireland',however the basic offering for 50euro has a 1gb cap and states 'no peer to peer file sharing'.that seems very restrictive, along with a 12month contract.has anyone tried it ,are there any decent alternatives for downloading with a satellite dish.9'd be reluctant to sign up for this

If its satellite that sounds about right. Satellite is very good at multicast downloads, OK ish at overnight downloads, ok for browsing but not so good for the rest. Unless the provider has more than one transponder you could get caught by oversell - every extra customer is pure profit because it's more or less fixed cost to hire the bandwidth on the satellite - and you are competitiong with people from all of Europe.

Unless it is a two way system you will also need to pay for the uplink - is it possible to get the esat €25 per month phone offer if you aren't on their BB ?

Peer to peer file sharing - most providers lean on this :eg NTL cable with a 1Gb cap per day don't allow you to run any services. Netsource ADSL just lump them on the same port, others reserve the right to charge per MB over your cap.

What's their web site address? That is indeed too limited, especially considering the cost.

If it turns out to be one way sat, then you'd be better off with Europe Online sat broadband at €99/year and a 1Gb/month cap. Its ok-ish when compared with the alternatives (ie. dialup)

EuropeOnLineEuropeOnLine is €10 a month and will flog you the dish and DVB card for €150 so thats €25 a month for the same service in year one and but you own the kit from day one and can change sat provider if they are sh1te( thay all go through phases)

FRIACO for the uplink is €20 or so and line rental €24 so about €70 the lot if you do it that way.

Your sky dish would be faced the wrong direction for europe online. Europe online is on 7*E (Eutelsat) whereas Sky is on 28.2*E (Astra 2). However, you could avail of sat broadband via www.cpsat.co.uk - who are on the same satellite as sky - you may have to shell out a bit more than europe online but the cap would be a little bigger too. check it out.
As regards setup, its not difficult and not that expensive - you just need a sat pci or usb card. If you get to that stage, there are people on the boards that can help in that respect.

FRIACO is a term used for 'flat rate internet access' eg. utvip from utv, and the flat rate packages offered by ESAT, etc.

The other offering on that satellite is silvermead(.co.uk) - they're both selling similar services basically although cpsat was getting better feedback last time i checked. You should do a search on both here on the boards - theres a couple of interesting threads which you'll probably find informative.
cpsat have a list of prices for their various packages on the site. I think they offer free trials which would probably be a good way to progress - to see what your getting for your money - although for this, you would need to have the dvb card..

Probably doesnt suit as your pointing at Astra2 but if you found yourself in a position to point elsewhere, then you can also subscribe to europeonline for a month - if your not happy - then cancel the sub (although some of their packages require 12 month minimum sub)..
