more compustore crazyness

For the last few months I've been trying to decide if I should setup a small fileserver on my home network or just bite the bullet and get an external firewire harddrive to ease the strain on my bloated 40GB laptop disk. Whilst browsing in compustore/soundstore over the weekend I noticed a Maxtor 250GB firewire drive for €429 (or it might have been €459). It was that one touch backup model. Thinking that was a little pricey for what was on offer I took my case to komplett who have the exact same drive for €292! Do my eyes decieve me or is that a whopping saving of nearly €150???

I know compustore are out to make a quick buck on the back of the less than average computer user but I was well & truly shocked when I saw a realistic price for the product. In fact the lowest price I can find is €235 from outpost.com but thats not taking shipping & customs duty into account.

I know it's another pseudo compustore bashing thread but wtf is going on there? Does anyone know of anywhere else I could get a price for this unit to compare?

Every PC retailer in Ireland are I'd 96% rip off, the very odd time you might get a bargin, ((ussualy a pricing mistake)).
All I can say is Ireland is a fcuking rip off in almost every department, Compustore --> how they are in trading I'll never know.

That was a good find rymus.......

    Thanks joePC

Also it has just come to my attention (I really have to keep my eye on the newspapers more) that PC Superstore have gone tits up. Bit of a shame really, only place in Cork city to get stuff now is compustore or one of the small mom & pop outfits.

I reckon I'll get that drive from outpost once I find out about shipping & duty and all that...

Yeah, It's a real pity Pc Superstore went belly up.
I was genuinly suprised the first time I went into one of their places and saw RESONABLE PRICES:eek:

Anyone know any other places in Cork where you can pick components up ?? Every so often, I need bits and pieces and can't wait for 2 or 3 days for delivery. PC Superstore were great for that.

Just yesterday, badly needed a PSU and literally couldn't find anywhere in Cork selling them off the shelf.

If anyone knows anywhere please let us know.

Theres a place out in blackpool called IT Stock (www.itstock.ie I think) that seem alright. Dunno what their product range is like though. You could always try the computer clinic over on the south terrace, they seem to have gone into the over the counter sales thing a bit more of late.

Advantage in Douglas west used to be more or less alright for components until he sold up his shop and is now running a stall in douglas court shopping centre. A crap stall that only seems to specialise in blank cd's and cheap digital cameras. We're in bad need of a peats/maplin/komplett type operation down here.

Thanks Rymus, I'll check out that place in Blackpool, any idea roughly where they are ? Not in the shopping center I suppose ...

I was looking for a PSU recently and I got it at Cork Computer Clinic (or something like that). It's on South Terrace more or less accross from Lee Garage.
Nice enough chap, reasonably priced ...

    Cheers

Rather surpised myself about PC Superstore being closed. I was headed there today and the place shut up. Any reason why, for it did seem fairly busy the times I was there?

never thought i would be defending compustore but the reason for their high price on the hard drive could be down to the fact they bought the drive in when prices were high and now with price drops they are over priced. happens alot when buying in bulk like they do.

At an EGM on Monday 26/01/04 PC Superstore Ltd passed a special resolution for voluntary liquidation.

Maybe it was their branded nomake CD-R's! Who buys discs like that, they could have been coasters.

BTW Rymus their ltd addr was c-line.

What I'm left wondering now is... what will the PC Superstore building become? A HUGE phone shop? A clothes shop? I wouldn't mind taking the lease myself and turning it into the mother of all internet cafe's :D (with live strippers of course)
