Spirit FM a "youth orientated christian radio service" took to the airwaves midnight on Friday. They are broadcasting from the top of Three Rock on 89.9FM using a temporary radio licence from the BCI. They'll be on every weekend for the next 12 weeks. Anybody tune in?

One has to ask how long will it before other religions request access to the airwaves. Also one wonders when ComReg will crack down on unlicensed FM broadcasts from churches around the country and the many relays of UCB and Cross Rhythms Radio.

Ok of the topic but ... ... ...

Why would ComReg Crack down would it not be the job of the BCI to do that?????

I mean the BCI issue the licences.

BCI issue programme contract licences i.e. the radio station programming that you hear. Comreg manage the radio frequency spectrum and allocate the licence for you to broadcast your programme service. With local station they are awarded a licence from the BCi and then various licences from ComReg for the various FM frequencies used.

BCI don't regulate any unlicenced stations as they haven't issued them any programming licences. ComReg have to go after them for unlicenced use of a radio frequency.

In summary, the BCI lissue programming content licences and ComReg issue radio frequency licences.

Could ComReg issue a radio frequence to an unlicenced station?

You would have to have a programme service contract licence first.
