    How do u force close programs, like ctrl alt delete in windows?

    killall <application_name> from command line.

    if it's a desktop(x) application which you don't have the name of do a ctrl-alt-escape and your mouse will become a little pirate icon, left click on the window. Bye Bye app!

    killall is far more total, nice when needed

    I've never really understood the reasons for different levels of kill, like kill -9, kill -18, killall etc.

    Surely if you want to kill it, you want it dead, not maimed, paralysied, crippled, comatose...?

    I understand the need to differentiate between different instances of the same program, but once you've localised the individual process you need, why not put it out of its misery in one go? :)
