Hebrides gays go back into closet

THE only gay club in the Hebrides has been forced to close because members claimed homophobic attitudes on the islands prevented them coming out, writes Karin Goodwin.

After meeting in secret for almost two years at a series of undisclosed locations, members of Gay Hebrides have called it a day.

Members say they were unable to publicise any details about their activities because they feared they would become the victims of a hate campaign.

Support groups say the subterfuge became too much for members, who decided to disband. The club’s website was withdrawn last week.

The closure means that gay men and women have to travel hundreds of miles to Inverness to access their nearest gay network.

Support groups expressed disappointment but said they were not surprised that the pressures of running the site in a rural community became too much.Tim Hopkins of the Equality Network said gay men and women living in rural communities had been worried by homophobic attitudes.
