ComReg have done a 180 degree turn which means they will not oblige the mobile telcos to alert users when calls go off network.

Before xmas ComReg announced a system whereby if, for example, you were on 086 user and rang another 086 number you would hear a tone alert in the event that the person you were calling had taken advantage of mobile number portability and was now with Vodafone or Meteor. ComReg then, correctly, said this was important so you would know how much your calls were costing.

Suddenly now the mobile operators have discovered this would be expensive to put in place! (Something they all forgot to tell ComReg in the initial consultation!)

So ComReg do a complete about turn on the whole thing and let the operators off the hook (arguing) that the number of complaints to their consumer line on this subject has reduced over the last few months.
