TV3 Claims 81% of Irish viewers watched I'm a Celebrity

TV3 claim that 53% of those watching TV on Monday night (arguably the best night of the week for TV viewing), were watching I'm A Celebrity, Get me out of Here! on TV3. Not only is that an astounding claim in itself (when was the last time you heard of a single channel in multi-channel land taking 53% of any audiende - the World Cup?), but they add to this incredible claim that a further 197,000 viewers watched the same show at the same time on UTV.

Now for the maths bit - TV3 claim that 53% of the audience = 375,000 viewers on Monday night. By deduction, the entire viewing public on Monday night must be 707,500. Now add UTVs viewers to TV3s to get the total audience for IACGMOOH (572,000).

Essentially, if TV3 are to be believed, then a massive 81%, or more than 4 out of 5 Irish TV viewers, were watching the same show!! While their pooly worded press release is not clear regarding 'total audience' or 'total 15-34 audience', I still think that this claim beggars belief.

What were you watching between 9pm and 10.30pm on Monday? Des Bishop, anyone? The RTE Nine O'Clock news, anyone? Eastenders on RTE or even BBC? Friends, Scrubs? MTV, Sky News, UK Gold, Sky One?

TV3's press release, with audience breakdown here

I'm ashamed to say I watched I'm a Celebrity and missed Friends as a result on Monday nighht. The show is addictive.

Flicked through the channels, nothing on. Pondered watching "I'm a celebrity" or turning off the tv and finding something else to do. I found something else to do.

maybe they meant 51 people, not 51% of people. sounds more believeable to me.

Perhaps they are only measuring against RTE1, Network 2 and TG4. They might not be including the non-Irish channels

Was not watching it and never have. Watched Friends, Scrubs and The Handler while that tripe was on. I can't see how that many people would have watched when Friends and Scrubs was on..surely they would be more popular.

Perhaps you are right! However, if that is the case then TV3 have been:

    1. A little disingenuous, as they state nowhere that that is the case
    2. Duplicitous, as they include / refer to UTV in their claims

53% audience share is a huge audience when you consider what was on other channels at the time (RTE1 typically commands twice the audience of TV3, and of Network 2, who have similar share).

Well you'll find me watching Des Bishop on Network 2 on a Monday night. Wouldn't watch I'm a Celebrity if you paid me.

    A little disingenuous

    A TV Channel? Never! :D

It doesn't nessecarily mean that that percentage watched the whole show either

i got hounded in the uk about not having a tv licence. they would send me letters on a regular basis and had their vans parked over the road on and off for over a year.

basically i was living in a listed building in a conservation area and as the existing aerial was on top of a 60 foot tower (old owner was a ham radio buff) which had to be taken down cos it was rusted TO hell i the wouldn't let me put up an external aerial on the roof. tried a loft one but got bugger all on it, even with signal boosters.

    bastards wouldn't leave me alone.

TV3 like to put a spin on things

e.g. 50% of all programming comes from Europe, which is more then the total amount required by TV3 to show.

Well the UK is part of Europe after all.

I just read on an F1 website that Jordan says she had an affair with Ralf Schumacher on and off for 3 years!! And beckham was mentioned also. Her new book will be worth reading just for that part alone!!

    U LOVE UTV....

While I agree Granda and ITV can make good drama, I don't think
    Emmerdale,
    Coro St.
    Heartbeat,
    The Royal
Fall into there good drama output.

    I hope it's a sacracstic Woooo Whoooo
