What are the best books for non-programmers and non-technical people who want to learn about Unix and Linux, please?

    Hi luckat,
it depends on what you want to learn about.

Are you interested in using a linux/unix system as a desktop?
Are you interested in learning programming in some language?
Are you interested in learning about how computers communicate with each other?
Maybe you're interested in the history of the unix operating system families over the last 30 years.

A good online library is the Linux Documentation project at http://en.tldp.org

Spend a bit of time there before deciding what books you'd really like.

    Best of luck,
    NiallB

The O'Reilly Unix Cd Bookshelf is what you want.

    Anderson - Just Enough Unix

SuSe Unleashed, Linux in 24 Days etc will all suit your purposes fine too though!

If you want to get into advanced shell programming you'd best get the Unix Enviroment book by Kernighan.
