We're trying to do a few little DIY things to sell our house, like painting rooms that look old and tired.
Does anyone have any suggestions of things that we can do cheaply but with maximum impact for selling the house??

like painting rooms that look old and tired.

How do u make a room look old and tired!! Sorry only messing!!

After watchin too many DIY programs the things that stick out.

If the room is small put a mirror direct across from a window to enlarge the room.

Lite colors, magnolia brighten a room and give it a airy feeling.

Candles lighting seem to be suggested as do smell of baking bread, coffee.

Table set with the idea of a party

If you have dark tiles u can paint them with "tile paint" to brighten them up or even paint a few of them.
Also u can get transfers to put on say white tiles to make patterns

Take up dark carpets, seem to say to paint or sand and varnish old timber floors if u have them.

Paint old radiators with the enamel pain to brighten them up

Something about a room with one wall painted with a darker color than the other 3, something to do with a study as far I remember.

Do not leave the house personalised at all, take out/down all personal pictures, artifacts and store away.

If suite of furniture is drab then buy some throws to cover them.

Put in a corner lamp and have it on, it gives a sense of warmth as is a good fire.

DO NOT POINT OUT ANY BAD POINTS (Sorry for the upper case, they seem to reaaaally stress this in programs!!)

Make sure glass in windows is gleaming.

    Hope this helps

Simple tip - get rid of any cats or dogs around the house --- for the day anyway!

People don't seem to go for other peoples' pets!

Loose clutter and spare furniture - it makes rooms look smaller. Remove unused clothes from wardrobes to give the impression they are big enough for anyone.

If you have a spare room / office, put a bed in it. It's another bedroom.

If you have an attic, you could convert it, but don't spend too much on something that someone else won't like, will cost them to rip out and which cost they will deduct from their bidding price.

If you have a garage consider converting it to a bedroom (may need planning permission). Do not spend exorbitant amounts of money on something a buyer might change. If possible have this room self contained as a bedsit (qualifies for the taxfree rent-a-room scheme).

A surveyor will be suspicious of anything newly painted - they will ask "Why was it painted? What are they hiding? Is their something wrong with the house".

If possible, loose 1970s manky nylon carpets.

Clean as much as is reasonable, especially things that look "ick".

Do not spend money on fittings someone else won't like.

Remove and fittings (e.g. fancy lights) you want to take with you.

we're gonna paint some ikky rooms but the fresh smell of paint should be gone by the time we decide to put it on the market.

When someone comes to view the house, have a pot of coffee brewing.

    It's simple, but VERY effective.

a vanilla pod in a bowl of water in the oven is a better idea
