Radio Kilkenny lost its licence to broadcast. This successfull radio station is gone off the air and the viley incompetent quango, the BCI has not a replacement up yet despite the fact that they awarded the licence for Carlow/ Kilkenny to a consortium headed my the counties worst radio station(on the JLR figures alone), Newstalk 106.

    What to be done?

Those who live by the BCI, die by the BCI...

The fact is that Radio Kilkenny won its licence in the same way it lost it. They agreed when entering into the competition to get their franchise, back in 1989/1990, that there would be a review after seven years and a full franchise round after fourteen. That was the terms under which they were given their licence and the BCI, who are the authority set up to provide independent local radio in Ireland, were perfectly within their rights to award the contract to a different company.

No company given a monopoly in service provision by the state should have the unquestioned right to provide that service forever. Either there is competition in the field (ie another station franchised to provide a service in that area) or competition for the field.

Talking of franchise changes... I totally forgot that yesterday was CKR's last day and today the first of KFM (/me goes over to Radiowaves to see what the story was...)

Newstalk are a relatively successful station. As a niche station you would not expect them to even come close to the figures that many local stations outside of Dublin have attained plus Dublin is a more competitive market than most other franchise areas. From listening to Newstalk they certainly seem to be pulling in more advertising.

It is unfortunate that R. Kilkenny lost out but as an ousider passing through their franchise area I never though it was that good a listen.
