Mac Antivirus software

Firstly, I know nothing about Macs, so please bear with me.

A friend of mine has a Mac with OS9 on it. Her Mac was recently infected with a virus via email. For the PC, there are lots of free virus scanners available online, but I couldn't find one for the Mac. Indeed, all I could find was McAfee for the Mac & Norton for the Mac. Neither was available as an evaluation copy (which they are for the PC). What do Mac people use for virus scanning? Is there any 'free' option, or do you just have to pay up for the one of the Norton/ McAfee packages?

(Again, excuse the naivety of this question) Are there firewall issues for a Mac as there are with a PC, and, similarly, if yes - what protective software do you use?

    Thanks in advance.
