    No, all updates are sent via satellite, once the initial subscription period has expired, the only function the phone line serves is to enable you to buy box office events tru the remote instead of having to ring up,and pariicipate in the active junk

    Just a reminder - if you have a FTV card then most definately don't hook up the phone line.

    BTW: in the UK it costs 25p to press the red button on sky news...

    That's not entirely an accurate statement.

    Sky News Active, the 8-screen matrix from which users can select any one ¼ or full screen, scroll through using the arrow buttons, view associated text and so on - which is accessed by a press of the red button - is, in the main, entirely free to use.

    However, some interactive applications (e.g. voting in one of their interminable "viewers' polls" uses the telephone line and does cost - charges vary but are always shown before dialling commences.
