    Chambers criticise transport unions' tactics
    January 30, 2004

(10:14) The chambers of Commerce of Ireland have accused public transport unions of guerrilla-tactic industrial relations to prevent the introduction of competition in the transport sector.

Speaking ahead of today's plenary meeting of the social partners at Dublin Castle, CCI President Mark Staunton said that ultimately the private sector would be left to pay the price for whatever concessions are forced by what he called the blatant bully tactics of CIÉ and Aer Rianta unions.

Mr Staunton said that vested interests seeking to prevent the introduction of competition in transport services were creating uncertainty and disruption, and stunting the sort of efficiency gains already realised through the private sector.

He said the CCI was also concerned that the partnership process was being by-passed by back-room discussions.

Meanwhile, the SIPTU strike committees at the three CIÉ companies meet at midday to consider yesterday's proposals from the Minister for Transport for a new talks process on the future of the company.

The National Bus and Railworkers Union, which represents a majority of bus drivers, has already given the proposals a cautious welcome.
