    No.

    You only really need them in the studio. You wouldn't notice the effect of a compressor when doing a gig, so why bother?
    Doesn't matter.

    You won't need one in the studio, the engineer will look after that. If you need one live is up to you. A compressor will lenghten note sustain and may reduce the attack of your notes. It can also be useful in stopping certain bass notes from being unexpectedly louder than the others, which is a common problem with bass instruments. One way or another, you will notice the effect of it, unless you leave it turned off or can't figure out how to use it.
