Sorry to see Scarlett Johansson not in Best Actress category.
Good to see Ken Watanabe getting the nod.
No Spirited Away in Best Animation/Foreign Movie?

Wuhoo! Depp got nominated. OK I ain't see "House of Sand of Fog" but I've seen the others and they're all good. Penn is good but he's a bit... his performance grates somewhat. I don't want him to win. Murray is good but he's still being Murray. Law... nice entry but my hopes are DEFINETELY on Depp for this one for a brilliant observed, original, sharp, and revealing performance.

    ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE
    Alec Baldwin - THE COOLER
Benicio Del Toro - 21 GRAMS
    Djimon Hounsou - IN AMERICA
    Tim Robbins - MYSTIC RIVER
Ken Watanabe - THE LAST SAMURAI
Blast, hardly seen any of these. Tim Robbins or Ken Watanbe only... hmm.... Based on the two I know, I'd like to see Watanabe win. Also it'd annoy Cruise so that's gotta be good :D

    ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE
    Keisha Castle-Hughes - WHALE RIDER
Diane Keaton - SOMETHING'S GOTTA GIVE
    Samantha Morton - IN AMERICA
    Charlize Theron - MONSTER
    Naomi Watts - 21 GRAMS

Can't work on htis - we ain't seen most of these movies! Whale Rider though, eh? Purely on revealing performances, I'd give it to her. Very naturalistic.

    ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE
Shohreh Aghdashloo - HOUSE OF SAND AND FOG
Patricia Clarkson - PIECES OF APRIL
Marcia Gay Harden - MYSTIC RIVER
    Holly Hunter - THIRTEEN
    Renée Zellweger - COLD MOUNTAIN

Dammit! Why don't we get to see these movies!!! 3 of 5 isn't enough! Anyway, I really enjoyed Zellweger in "Cold Mountain" - full of vitality, lighting up the screen. She's been snubbed before so I expect that she will - deservedly - win this category.

    ANIMATED FEATURE FILM
    BROTHER BEAR
    FINDING NEMO
    THE TRIPLETS OF BELLEVILLE

Ain't seen "Brother Bear" but, from all reports, I don't need to. Belleville Rendez-Vous was good but Finding Nemo easily outclassed it. I expect Pixar have this one sown up and well done them.

    ART DIRECTION
    GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRING
    THE LAST SAMURAI
THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING
MASTER AND COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD
    SEABISCUIT

Toughie, and not just because I don't know much about art direction. All looked well done, although Girl with... seemed VERY authentic. However, for sheer breadth and scope, my money is going to LotR: RotK for this one, and I suspect it will win too.

    CINEMATOGRAPHY
    CITY OF GOD
    COLD MOUNTAIN
    GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRING
MASTER AND COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD
    SEABISCUIT
Didn't see, nor care to see, Seabiccies. Three of these are stunning - Cold Mountain looks sumptuous but 'City of God' has the edge of using different camera techniques as appropriate. I want 'City of God' to win but I expect 'Cold Mountain' will.

    COSTUME DESIGN
    GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRING
    THE LAST SAMURAI
THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING
MASTER AND COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD
    SEABISCUIT

Again, for sheer variety I want LotR: RotK to win. However, 'Girl with a...' was extremely authentic and has a viable chance here. 'The Last Samurai' I reckon is also plausible, as it has greater scope and "eastern mysticism" quality than "Master and Ccommander". I want LotR: RotK to win here but I'm pitching for "Girl With A Pearl Earring" to carry home Oscar.

    DIRECTING
    CITY OF GOD
THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING
    LOST IN TRANSLATION
MASTER AND COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD
    MYSTIC RIVER

Jackson is a shoe-in for this. He deserves it too. Easy category :)

    FILM EDITING
    CITY OF GOD
    COLD MOUNTAIN
THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING
MASTER AND COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD
    SEABISCUIT

Whoa hard one. One of the flaws with LotR: RotK was a question of pacing. The editing was good - but not allways 100%. 'Cold Mountain' had actually a very good pace so I wouldn't mind seeing a win here. However, my sneaky hope is to see "City of God" win. I reckon LotR: RotK will actually win though.

    MAKEUP
THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING
MASTER AND COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD
PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL

If LotR: RotK doesn't win this one, for its amazing work, then there's no justice. None. It should. It will.

    MUSIC (SCORE)
    BIG FISH
    COLD MOUNTAIN
    FINDING NEMO
    HOUSE OF SAND AND FOG
THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING

Again, LotR: RotK should win this, especially on how it develops and reuses, as appropriate, the scores from the previous movies. I predict it wins too.

    MUSIC (SONG)
"Into the West" - THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING
"A Kiss at the End of the Rainbow" - A MIGHTY WIND
    "Scarlet Tide" - COLD MOUNTAIN
"The Triplets of Belleville" - THE TRIPLETS OF BELLEVILLE
"You Will Be My Ain True Love" - COLD MOUNTAIN
LotR: RotK again, although "The Triplets of Bellville" might have an outside chance - it's annoyingly catchy!

    BEST PICTURE
THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING
    LOST IN TRANSLATION
MASTER AND COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD
    MYSTIC RIVER
    SEABISCUIT

LotR: RotK a virtually no-brainer here. If it must lose, make it lose to the enjoyable "Lost in Translation".

    SOUND
    THE LAST SAMURAI
THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING
MASTER AND COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD
PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL
    SEABISCUIT

Guess what I'm gonna say? Yeah. Still my 2nd choice is for Pirates of.. - I actually remember noticing the sound in this. Full, rich, vibrant and it dragged me into the movie.

    SOUND EDITING
    FINDING NEMO
MASTER AND COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD
PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL

    Again with the Pirates!

    VISUAL EFFECTS
THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING
MASTER AND COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD
PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL

Any chance RotK WON'T win this one? Smeagol/Gollum clinches it. Hand it over now!

    WRITING (ADAPTED SCREENPLAY)
    AMERICAN SPLENDOR
    CITY OF GOD
THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING
    MYSTIC RIVER
    SEABISCUIT

I've only read one of the source materials but from what I call Jackson and Fran Walsh have done a great job. Give it over to 'em.

    WRITING (ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY)
    THE BARBARIAN INVASIONS
    DIRTY PRETTY THINGS
    FINDING NEMO
    IN AMERICA
    LOST IN TRANSLATION
Only seen two of these. I'd love to see "Finding Nemo" win - very funny, touching, smart, etc. I bet "Lost in Translation" will though - and I'll be satisfied.

    Goddamn that took a while...

    BEST PICTURE
    Kill Bill
    Matrix revulations

I agree with ixoy, its hard to make a call when you've not seen the fuller picture - excuse the pun:D

I really find it a great pity that with all the fine acting in the Return of the King, no acting nomination was put forward.
The triliogy had plenty of potentials and its a shame that only one nomination was in the acting category (Gandalf - FOTR). The trilogy deserved at least one acting oscar never mind just one nomination.

As a LOTR fans I can see this cermony going one of two ways, either a sweep or one/two of the technical awards, not in the 4/5 out of 11 categories.
I'll pitch for a Sweep as the academy has the tradition of rewarding bodies of work.

Nemo HAS to win, please not Seabikkie, Mr Depp has a fine body of work behind him - couldn't belive its only his first nomination.

Im really surprised that Dark Blue wasnt nominated for best picture. Or Kurt Russel for best actor. And not giving Andy Serkias a nomination is a disgrace.

Come on people. The oscars are nothing more than a seasonal pat on the back for undeserving films. Some of the greatest cinematic legends never won an oscar, Akira Kurosawa, Peter O Toole, ect, ect...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 735 ✭✭✭beardedchicken

    hmmm... mixed emotions:
i was really glad to see ROTK up for best picture, i think, judging by its win in the golden globes, it has a very good chance of winning!
it was really surprising to see johnny depp nominated for best actor! i thought he was excellent, but i can't see him winning - it's not exactly an "oscar" performnce
really surprised, but very glad to see keisha castle-hughes up for best actress - i loved her performance in whale rider- great film and she carried the whole movie! it also makes a change for someone so young to be recognised.
but i think andy serkis should have definitely been nominated for best supporing actor- he effectively performed his role twice.

oh, and djimon hounsou in in america....... raaaar!

Cold Mountain is the third time Mingella and editor Walter Murch have worked together. Murch is a quadruple oscar winner and the first person to win two oscars on the same night (editing and sound editor on Apocaplyse Now) So he has the credibility.

I doubt LoTr will win, my money is on City of God, it's shiny and flashy and really well paced, and structure, but mostly shiny and flashy these films tend to win, the last few years.

i'm happy for rotk, it's an excellent film and deserves recognition.

but i'm disappointed about the matrix revolutions not getting the special effects nomination...

I'm not surprised in the slightest, that film was utter drivel.

As for the special effects Oscar, although Matrix Reloaded was a big let down (I'm not even going to recognise Revolutions as a Matrix film, or even a film for that matter) it does deserve at least a nomination. "The Twins" are brilliant and the highway scene was very well done.

Nah, I enjoyed Kill Bill: Volume 1 but it hadn't a hope in hell of getting nominated.

TBH, I laughed aloud when Matrix movies didn't even get a nomination for SFX. Hilarious! They were too cartoony and corny. Didn't deserve it. Oh and the SFX nominations were announced weeks ago, before the main Oscar nominations, so I've been laughing for days on end now.....

I would LOVE to see Depp getting the Oscar, but don't think it is very likely. Wonder hpw surprised he was to get nomionated, after all Pirates isn't really an oscar-type film is it?

    Others I hope win are:
LOTR (basically every category it is in) and Renée Zellweger, thought she was great in Col Mountain.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 293 ✭✭Buck Owens

Peter jackson, it would be great if he won, he really deserves it. NO acting noimations for ROTK is a let down. I would have went for Ian Mc kellan, Andy Serkis and Maybe Viggo.. What's his name! There should be a Best Group Cast Oscar. ROTK would get that! I think PJ biggest threat is Clint eastwood. Kill Bill did'nt get any thing cuz it's a half a film... same with the matrix I think... Dunno.

The Beacons are lit, Gondor calls for aid........And Rohan will answer.

well they deserved a vfx award. the new technologies created will be used for years, like bullet time. the man who heads up the vfx section of the academy did an interview where the matrix was mentioned and he said there was no nomination because warner brothers took away reloaded, and then wouldn't allow the visual effects people to talk about what they had done (there has to be a 15minute presentation for every nominee).

    oh well..

There was nothing new in the sequels except the burly brawl - and that looked crappy because you could see the faces were cearly computer generated....

all i have to say about the oscars is, If LOTR does not win the oscar for best picture then heads are going to roll. They have been passed over the last two oscars and not even one actor was nominated for best actor! WTF!!!! these things are rigged! The oscars have sucked for the last 3 years atleast. I mean really what the hell are they doing!
LOTR is clearly the most artistic, dramatic, comedic, movie out there. The best effects, the hardest work to make, the whole effort to make the series blows any other movie out of the water, jaysus!
I have to say if i were one of the lead actors from LOTR I would be raising a fuss! not one fukin' nomination! they had better make up for it by winning every other oscar they are nominated for.

    Damn it.

Well maybe Sean Astin deserved one? He's the only one I'd consider worthy. They're more deserve an esemble award than anything else.

Umm Bullet Time was invented in "The Matrix" in 1999. It won the VFX oscar back then - so you should be happy! The latest two movies did nothing interesting or new.

Ah.. good to see ROTK up for best film, director and many others.....it deserves those 2 and more for recognition of the whole trilogy.. It was such an achievement and feat pulled off by Jackson...watch the extended edition documentaries and ull see what Im taking about.:)

i wasn't referring to bullet time. for reloaded & revolutions they invented "virtual cinematography" which no one knows how to do because wb wont let anyone talk about it.

I imagine nobody particular cares how they did it - it looked awful. It's not good when people are openly laughing at the VFX in a movie as they did when I saw it.
