    Right i'm a complete linux n00b here.
I have installed Redhat 9 on a new. laptop

The install went fine but it did not pick up everything, as usual!

It has a winmodem from Smartlink and i got the latest driver release from them (slmdm-2.7.14). I compiled it and it installed fine, but when i go to dial up to the net i get a 'The modem is busy' error??
Does anyone know how to fix this?

The sound card wasn't picked up either.
I am getting this error after i boot up.
    ******************
    Sound server informational message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device /dev/dsp can't be opened (No such device)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device.
    ******************
Any help on this would be great.

Try running sndconfig from the command line and post up any errors you get. Also take a look at the sound section of /etc/modules.conf.

Device is busy could mean you aren't pointing to the right device or that the modem driver isn't loaded. Run lsmod and also check the symlink /dev/modem.

Also remember that RH won't be supporting/developing this line any more, you may want to consider switching to something like Mandrake...

Probably, it is the case that you have your dialer program pointed at the wrong device entry.

/dev/ttyS0 instead of /dev/ttySML0 (or similar).

RH ( is lumpy at laptops. Fedora would be a better choice.

not in my experience. Redhat detected everything in my laptop and configured them perfectly, except for one little tweak that was needed for console (vga=788 on bootup).

Yep. I'm dual booting RH9/2K on my laptop and it's been totally fine. I only had a small issue with getting my usb optical mouse and touchpad to work together but that was easily resolved.

I will have to move to a new OS I guess but I'm not in a huge rush, I'm going to wait and see how fedora pans out (wait for another core release or two) before i decide what to switch to.
