What were those sweet dispenser things called?

Basically the main body of the 'toy' was a rectangular plastic tube (perhaps 2-3 inches long?) usually with a cartoon characters HEAD on the top (eg Mickey Mouse, Goofy or whoever you like). Inside the tube was row of sweets and a spring mechanism beneath the sweets.

When you tilted the head on the top of the toy backwards the spring mechanism would push the sweets upwards towards the head so that you could take one of the sweets out of the tube. The head would then shoot back in its original position and one could get back to enjoying their sweet.

PEZ Are still big here in the US. You can still by them in almost every quicky mart. They still put the cool characters on them too.

Couldn't you get the actual Pez seperatly and refill the dispenser? Did anyone else trying to cram their penny sweets into them? Grubby 7 yr olds shoving blackjacks gone sticky in the heat into a little plastic tube to be retrieved later by a bic biro. Endearing image isn't it?

    Best Pez dispenser ever:

There's loads on Ebay. The sweets were annoying to cram in there with tiny kiddy fingers. The stack of sweets would fall apart and then I'd have pez sweets everywhere. Pez was great.
