Thoughtful/Non-generic songs...

Can anyone please recommend some songs/artists that go against the generic grain?

Those that actually have though-provoking, non done-to-death lyrics, i.e. I mean a lot of stuff I have/hear is about how much cash money and bitchnez playas' have, how they're going to hurt/kill someone, blah blah blah... I'm sick of it, want something different.

Only song I have as a reference is Honest Expression by Binary Star. Basically, none of the mainstream stuff (with exception)

    Thanks :p

    MURS,
    El-P,
    Company Flow,
    Aesop Rock,
    Cannibal Ox
    Basically, anything by Def Jux...

Rawkus is pretty good too, some people that spring to mind:
    Reflection Eternal (Talib Kweli too)
    Mos Def
    Common *Sense*

    Compilations:
    Lyricist Lounge 1
Soundbombing 1&2 (not a huge fan of the 3 myself, you might like it though)

    Others:
The Roots (Do you Want More is a great album)
    Sage Francis
    Jurassic 5
    De La Soul
    Jungle Brothers
    Tribe Called Quest
    Rakim
    Jedi Mind Tricks
    Large Professor
    Kool Keith
    Roots Manuva
    MF Doom
    Rae & Christian
    Saian Supa Crew

    Hope that helps!

I wholeheartedly agree. Definately a brilliant alternative style.

Compare current rap trends of bitches and ho's to the Arrested Development lyrics explaining how they want to appreciate their women etc etc.

Thoughtful lyrics that make you think about the world around you rather than stereotypes.

yeah, arrested development were an angry enough group when they wanted to be though.. rapping about killing preachers and revolution.. but it's all about the love :)

actually Speech from Arrested development has some solo **** out atm, i haerd a track or two a while back and it wasn't too bad.. probably worth checking out if you see it

Yeah he was doing some solo stuff as well when Arrested Development split up, but I never got to hear it. I might check out what stuff he has now.
