SiliconValleyOffline - well one net-head anyway:

Maybe this experiment will indicate just how important it is to be online.

The fact that he will be e-mailing his diary to someone to post it on his blog says a lot :D

While Steve might have closed his e-mail account, he is taking his trusty laptop on the road, along with a printer. He intends to write a regular newsletter and mail it to a friend who will publish it on his weblog.

He is 61 - some people would call that early retirement !
Is he an anthropoligist or sociologist - if so it's his job.

If he want to see the digital device - invite him over here .

"He intends to write a regular newsletter and mail it to a friend who will publish it on his weblog."

then he's not really offline, is he? He's like, passively offline. People can get info about him online, they just can't contact him directly....

But even if he was, what's the point?

Deliberately abandoning a useful device like for example, a mobile phone, is kind of the same mindset as those who would never put one down for a second: it's certainly reacting to the technology, so you could argue that it's a form of subjugation.

And I don't think anyone would do this type of cutting themselves off thing unless it (gasp) generated them an amount of publicity or (double gasp) they could make money out of it: seems kinda pointless to me.

Bet if he runs out of cash or is mugged in mexico, and the only means of calling for help is email he'll manage to make it to a web cafe, lol: so he's not really "cut off" is he...

like trying to 'cut yourself off' from the telephone system, really.
