Client has laptop (main boss etc..)

wants users to be able to use the laptop as per normal

but if the data (word docs) were to be copied off laptop would be rendered useless due to encryption etc..

now i know ppl will jump and shout pgp, gpg etc.. but not an option

there has to be something that'll do that!

    EDIT : for windows

Have a read and see if this suits you.

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/techinfo/howitworks/security/encrypt.asp

This scheme should protect against the scenario you describe, but I don't think helps if the laptop itself is nicked iirc? And also worth making sure that they don't export it using 40 bit keys or something dumb like that.

If you do decide to use it, make sure that you have a good key management scheme of some description to securely keep backups of private keys in case of the laptop getting screwed up.

Make sure you are service packed to the hilt - there was a nasty bug in the encryption when a reinstall meant you lost the key...

How about saving the docs on USB pen drives or other media which uses security (only some USB drives do) ?

I think some notebooks use the BIOS password to encrypt the HDD ..
