Memory card reader problem

I reckon this is the best forum to ask about this.

I was given one of those USB 8-in-1 memory card readers for Christmas (bought in Aldi or Lidl, I think) made by Typhoon. Works fine on Windows 98/Windows 2000 but not XP. It is recognised by XP, and the drive letters appear. Only when a card is inserted does everything stop with the following error in the System Event Log:

The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk4\D.

Microsoft suggests it is a cable problem with the device, but this I think this error is referring to a fixed SCSI disk. Also, the fact that it works on 98 and 2000 without problem casts more doubt on Microsoft's diagnosis. I have tried it with three different types of cards (CF, MMC and Smart Media).

There are no drivers for it (alledgedly built into XP) so I can't think what else to do.

    Any ideas?
