Well it is not much of a choice to advertisers on TV3 as they can always advertise on UTV.

Suppose it helps viewers with Sky Digital who want ITV.

And those of us who don't have cable or sat, just plain 1,2,3,4

hmmm i notice that tv3 is simulcasting itv for three hours straight tonight 7pm-10pm, sunday primetime
    what's the point ?

When I recall the mad clamour there was in the 80's and early 90's for a third TV channel and this is what we end up with. Simulcasts with a channel that the vast majority of people now have ready access to combined with other reheated ITV shows and the usual mix of US thrash (I'm convinced that if the Second Coming was to happen, TV3 would still find room for Judge Judy). I don't think they have added 1 bit of quality to the broadcasting spectrum apart from the Agenda programme and even that can be hard to bear considering the size of David McWilliam's head.

there should have been a clause in the commercial station licence that said they had to have at least 30% Irish shows, or something like that, then again, they wouldnt be very different to RTE then, but still, this is a joke.

AFAIK, there is a minimum percentage of about 50% to be indigenous programming, but they know they're not going to be regulated, see Eircom

Im not sure if there is, but your right, it wouldnt matter.

As far as i know you cant really dictate what a commercial channel can show (besides telling them how much news to have and how little porn to have). Again, I may be wrong..

You're wrong :) I haven't got the facts and figures to hand, but they've to meet certain targets in return for being given the license to broadcast in Ireland. This includes commissioning a certain percentage of homegrown tv shows.

They must make 25% Irish Progamming they met this requirement with.

    1. Ireland AM
    2. TV3 News
    3. Sports Tonight
    4. Champions League (IMO It's pushing it that this is an Irish Show)
    5. Popcorn
    6. Adgenda

Actually they go over their Min Requirement

The meet the European Directive on Television Without Frontiers be showing ITV show.

After all the UK are apart of the EU.

    Aren't they just wonderful.

IMO they should just have requirements during prime time. It is rediculus that the can show from 7 to 10 ITV shows on a sunday night.

I don't care if we don't pay for them they are there to provide a serive not a serice that if we really want we could get anyway. 70% of the population have UTV.

Perhaps someone who think they could do better should apply for a licenceto run a commerical channel.

Now that I would love to see

So your saying that less than 30 % of the Republic only have the 4 terrestrial channels and SKY .

I think it would be higher than that .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,133 ✭✭✭Genghis

Big Ears, don't forget that a lot of people who have Sky do not necessarily 'not have UTV'. Many homes subscribe to Sky, and to NTL / Chorus to ensure they have the full channel line-up (this is one of the main reasons Sky have been able to build up 300,000 customers without wiping out Chorus or NTL is that the total loss of subscribers from Chorus / NTL is much less than 300,000).

Also, a high percentage of homes in an arc from North Dublin through Meath, Cavan, Longford, Roscommon, Mayo, Sligo and Donegal can pick up UTV terrestrially.

I would say that 70% penetration is not far wrong.

I personnally would love to do this. Even if I was able to just provide TV from 7 to 10. 3hrs per day.

Fill the rest in with a music channel and not waste money on Morning and Daytime TV.

But how do I apply when the BCI aren't looking for an extra Channel?

Oh and then there is money issue? I don't have any, ****. I blame the TV Licence. :D

Well I for one am glad of the ITV shows on TV3, otherwise I'd have missed out on all the recent excitment that was the Corrie fight. Don't get ITV in campus in UCD. reduced to the terrestrial hannels, plus Sky News, TCM, Fashion and some extreme sports. So not a lot to watch.

Besides they show Buffy, and have great ads for their shows, so I'm all for TV3

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,641 ✭✭✭✭Elmo

Well I mean they do have to do something.
    the Corrie fight

You would still have been able to see that fight on RTE.

You see my problem is that TV3 tend to be adding to the problem that is RTE.

Rather then taking any chances (except with eamonn dunphy) TV3 drowns itself with ITV shows and mainly bad american imports (Ok they have Malcome). Most of which would have been show on RTE anyway.

I mean I am sure TV3 could do just as good a job of a soap opera as RTE prehaps better look at TG4 Ros Na Run is far better then Fair City.

I know I would be complaining if they did a soap opera (As i ****ing hate them) 3 times in the one night grrrrr grrrrr bad ITV down.

But for 1hr for even half the year would be fine.

    Sigh...

As annoyed and sickened as I am with TV3's current strategy, I once pledged my soul and allegiance to them in perpetuity because they showed Buffy in order, in a good timeslot, relatively uncut, and then showed Angel immediately afterwards. I can't think of any other terrestrial channel that would treat an off-beat show so well, even if it was a calcluated shot at a demographic. Look at what the BBC did to it.

Just like Dogma makes me loathe to mock Ben Affleck, TV3's past good deeds make me reluctant to give up on them. At least its not RTE1.

    TV3 never showed 'Angel'.

Tonight on TV3 there should've been the 'American Idol 3' Finale 8pm-10:15pm, but because they had to show 'Hell's Kitchen' @ 9pm in tandem with ITV they didn't have the room for it. I mean it's ridiculous for them to change their schedule to accomodate shows like this, that can be seen elsewhere @ exactly the same time. Talk about dumb.

Oh, and I don't have ITV/UTV, but TV3 are making sure I have to endure all their shows
Finally, I am aware that TV3 get 'American Idol' through their relationship with ITV, so I'm appreciating the irony of being annoyed that ITV shows are affecting 'Idol' on TV3. I'm still mad though

I'm nearly a hundred percent certain they did (I can even picture the add ends, which had the two gun toting demons at Cordelias' apartment, game-face angel from the opening sequence, and a cast shot that included Doyle, I think.)

I just can't find a way to prove it. :D

Yeah, my bad, I asked a friend after I'd posted and found out it was on TV3 for 2 seasons. Don't remember seeing it ever outside Sky One & C4, but there ya go :)

Lest we forget, Corrie was also one of the biggest programmes on RTE. RTE also used show Emmerdale and Heartbeat.

RTE of course was in receipt of much licence fee loot at the time.

Main quam's I have with our current stations would be lack of _anything_ on after 2am.
TV3 goes to ads, rte => aertel + euronews.
At least Sky [used to + sometimes] have damn brillant tv at this hour, some of the best.
Used to regularly watch star trek, and then jag/mash *sighs*, they were the days.
Get some good old TV back, it's cheap, and a lot better than most of today's crud.

I of course also dispise tv3s daytime tv ... I think tv3 have on avg 30mins - 1 hr of good tv a day, if lucky ? and the odd ok film ?

Would it cost them extra to repeat good shows at night? I get the odd bout of insomnia, and it is really not fun to trawl through the sh*t thats on after 2 on terrestrial TV...

I think with some shows like 'The Simpsons' Sky pay to show them a certain number of times, but then E4 seem to have 'Friends' on all the time, so I dunno if repeats cost them more than just buying shows to air once?
Sky Plus is handy for late-night viewing :D

Sent an e-mail to TV3 telling them to stop broadcasting ****, pointed out to them via TAM ratings that their strategy isn't working and supplied constructive advice on how to improve programming so that I and others might have a reason to bother to tune in.

I believe there is the possibility they might listen to constructive user feedback even though they still are focused primarily on the bottom line.

No but if TV3 wasn't around RTE would still be showing it. So TV3 haven't made a major impact other then the fact that if you didn't get the BBC you would get EastEnders on RTE. (I am not advocating RTE having either show)
Lest we forget, Corrie was also one of the biggest programmes on RTE. RTE also used show Emmerdale and Heartbeat.

Indeed, but one must now also point out that EastEnders is far more popular on RTE then it ever was on TV3. and the same goes for Coronation Street, when it started out on RTE 2 it never really made it into the TV TAMs/Ratings.

I completely disagree with RTE having EastEnders, they should use it to make other shows.

    I sent this to TV3...
    Hi.

I was just curious how it works: Does TV3 pay a royalty everytime it shows a programme or do you pay a one off fee for rights to a show?

I ask because I was curious as to why you don't repeat old episodes of cult shows (eg. Buffy, Roswell, the first seasons of Angel) late at night? Insomniac webheads like me are up til 3 or 4 at night most weekdays, and we all seem to love those shows in particular. I was curious as to why TV3 don't take advantage of that market in a similar way to Net 2 and Sky One.

    Just wondering,

    Cheers,

    And I got this...
Thank you for your email. Generally most stations will have a contract to show certain programmes once or twice over a specified period of time and sometimes within certain time slots. Generally a commercial independent station such as TV3 would show more popular programmes such as "Buffy", in Peak where there is a bigger audience.

    Which...sort of answers my question...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,641 ✭✭✭✭Elmo

What they didn't say was that they would have to make more Irish TV to provide more Hours of TV during the night.

They must have a 25% Irish TV Quoat, as I said before they do this with Ireland AM and the News.

Flick on to TV3 there twice during Ireland AM, is it just Adds and news? Retorical (sp)question

Jill if you want more late night TV pray for more Ireland AM. I beleive they have a 1/2 a hour day time chat show planned for next season, in replace of dunphy. More late nights i think.
Generally a commercial independent station such as TV3 would show more popular programmes such as "Buffy", in Peak where there is a bigger audience.

is less then 100,000 viewers popular for Buffy? or any show for that matter. Espcially when you think that TV3 can average 500,000 viewers for Coro St and 250,000 for Emmerdale while cann't generally put in average of 100,000 for the rest of their shows.

I know people like Buffy but I think it is very much a cult following. (I am not part of the Buffy cult, I prefer real slayers like Blade and a real vampire towns like 'sALEMS LOT)
