Sky Subscription Charges

Have Sky increased their subscription charges since last November? I don't recall reading anything about it in their last couple of magazines, but I could have missed it. I'm on the €60/month package. In December they took €60.55 from my account, and this month they took €61 from my account. I know it's not much of a difference, but I was just wondering is it a legitimate price increase that I missed, or are they trying to pull a fast one. If it's the latter, I have no more intention of letting them away with overcharging me than they would have of letting me away with it if the full funds weren't available. Is it just me, or have others noticed any difference from their usual sub over the last couple of months?

I got a letter from them saying they're increasing the prices, and what the new price is, but that was only earlier this month.

They sent the letters out with the October magazine, price increase took effect on J an 1st but as the direct debits are collected in advance my first increase was taken out in Nov (covering 1st to 4th Jan) and full increase then from Dec onwards.

You might have missed the letter as there is so much junk included with the mag!!

Yep, so much junk it's hard to pay attention to everything. At least I know it's a legit charge, so I'm (relatively) happy. Thanks for the info.

Absolutely NO-ONE in Ireland has any control of Sky packages or Pricing in Ireland.
Nor control what Package Sky put RTE in or price of RTE.

The UK can regulate Sky, but have mostly done little. How worried is UK regulator about Sky pricing and packages here?

The price increases are legitimate in sense that it really is Sky taking the money, and not just off you!

In terms of English (and Irish) Language Pay TV by Satellite, we basically have an unregulated Foriegn company in a Monopoly situation.

Really Sky are amazingly self controlled as they more or less offer the Irish subscriber the same deal at the same price as the UK customer.

    Consider:

FTA satellite: If EVERYONE cancelled for a few months the price would drop! (There is no reconnection charge, re-connection is "instant" by phone call and one month notice to "disconnect" after 1 year or any reconnection.) You will have MORE BBC channels WITHOUT an Irish sub, that with it, on the EPG.

You own all the gear from Day One.

    Other Pay TV providers:
Canaal Digital, Canal+, ABSat etc. Techincally, you may legally subscribe (easier or harder depending on provider). Many films may have english track. English is variable content on other channels. Dutch Providers plenty English, AB Sat mostly French. Generally much cheaper than Sky, but needs a NON-Digibox with CAM and viewing card

Take out a UK sub and lose RTE1, NET2, TV3 and TG4, but get ITV, C4 and Five (keeping them even when you cancel as a cancelled UK sub card works as a FTV card).

Motorised Dish or multiple LNBs on Dish and non-Sky Digital Receiver (€400 once off for GOOD system). Get the BEST FREE channels in the whole Sky from 42E to 30W.

    Simpsons: Tango TV
    US Sitcoms: CNBCe
    Sport: Various
News/ Documentaries: TV5, DW-TV, TVEi, NileTV , C-Span/VOA TV, BBC World TV all Free.
    Discovery Europe Free
    A gazzilion Pop video channels
Ooodles of English, Jazz, Classical, Pop, Rock, Oldies etc dedicated radio FREE

    Satellite does not mean Sky.

    "Discovery Europe Free"
    From which satellite?
Are National Geographic or the History Channel available free anywhere?

    Turksat @ 42E
Select "French" Language to get Ennglish instead of Turkish

Same satellite has a Channel that is part Time "History Channel" but sometimes only in Not-english.

National Geographic did use to be FTA on an American CONUS beam (CONtinental USa). You wouldn't get that even with 100m dish on Rockhall. Probabily.

I'll limit myself to 20 rants a year. Have I used up today's quota?

OK a bit of a rant, but still true.

Shhhhh! on the Watty (you never know who reads these posts).

Should the BBCi Science News be renamed "Ripley's Belive it Or Not?"
